An idea for a thread, it may work, it may not. Anyway, I thought we could post reports/vids etc of any demonstration/protest/strike/riot/other 'civil unrest' and find one happening on each day. In part as a means to report each one but also to show that people aren't complacent, people are getting off their arses and doing something about the wrongs they see.

P.S. this thread is NOT for discussing the rights and wrongs of protest, please start another thread if you wish to have this discussion.

So...

In a culmination of the ‘Week of Indignation,’ over 300,000 Colombians marched in the nation’s main cities and condemned social inequality. Clashes erupted when police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters in Bogota, Colombia. More than 70 protesters get arrested.

Thousands of people have protested in New South Wales against coal seam gas mining.

The two largest protests were in Sydney and the north coast town of Murwillumbah.

The rallies are part of a national week of action against coal and coal seam gas and have been organised by the national Lock The Gate alliance.

They come after the New South Wales Minister for Resources Chris Hartcher offered to renew 22 coal seam gas exploration licences last month.

Jacinta Green of the Stop CSG Sydney group says coal seam gas production is already underway in Sydney at Camden and a new well's been drilled next to the Nepean River.

She says by renewing coal seam gas licences across Sydney suburbs and in drinking water catchments, the state government has allowed that the mining industry to endanger people's precious water resources.

Badger Cull Demo Outside Tesco in Broadmead, Bristol

The growing campaign against the badger cull hit Bristol today with around 25 anti-cull activists protesting against Tesco for selling milk produced in the badger cull areas. The protest began at 11am and continued until around 13:30. Boards were placed against the shop wall and activists, some wearing badger masks, handed out leaflets with information on the cull, encouraging shoppers to sign the petition to the government, stop buying their milk from Tesco and other stores that sell milk sourced from the cull areas (such as Sainsbury's), and to take part in further actions against the cull.

The Co-op, Marks and Spencer and Waitrose have stated that they do not sell milk from the cull areas, and anti-cull campaigners directed shoppers to these supermarkets.

Shoppers generally reacted very positively to the protest, with many people commenting that they don't usually support animal rights campaigns, but this one is something they feel very strongly about. Protestors were not bothered by security in Tesco and an employee even took a leaflet and asked "where do I sign?".

The good turnout has prompted another demo on Tuesday 16th October at 11am outside Tesco and a demo against Sainsbury's Local in Kingsmead Square, Bath on Saturday 27th October at 10am.

Global Noise takes on austerity: 'We are not going to be silent'

Published: 14 October, 2012, 08:05

Demonstrators across the world are calling for an end to austerity as Global Noise protests kick off in more than 30 countries, including many in the Nobel Peace laureate European Union.

The worldwide demonstrations on Saturday passed without incident, and Caleb Maupin from the International Action Centre explained what's driving the public to take to the streets.

RT: A year ago Occupy Wall Street spread across the world, and now it’s Global Noise. What is Global Noise all about? How is it different?

Caleb Maupin: Basically, Global Noise is saying we are not going to be silent. Because right now the banks are coming for us – they are cutting all of the programs. There is mass unemployment. There is cutting in government spending and the governments of the world are just having to pay back the banks.

And in the process, our future is being destroyed. It is impossible to get an education in this country without a rising debt. What we are saying is that we are going to be a global noise. We are the next generation, the youth part of the working class as our future is being destroyed. We are not going to silently sit back and let them destroy our future. We are going to be loud. We are going to be confrontational and we are going demand that this stop.

Austerity is a crime against the people. These cuts are a crime against us, and we are going to demonstrate and we are going to oppose it.

Here's one that's concerning for all the wrong reasons, imo...

Muslims protest 'age of mockery' as thousands descend on Google HQ

Thousands of Muslims have pledged a series of protests against Google HQ for a "hateful and offensive" anti-Islam video, saying they now live in an "age of mockery".

By Jennifer O'Mahony3:52PM BST 14 Oct 2012

A protest by 10,000 Muslims outside the offices of Google in London today is just the first in an orchestrated attempt to force the company to remove an anti-Islamic film from website YouTube in Britain.

Thousands had travelled from as far afield as Glasgow to take part in the demonstration, ahead of a planned million-strong march in Hyde Park in coming weeks.

Anger over 'The Innocence of Muslims', an American-produced film which insults the Prophet Mohammad and demeans Muslims, according to protesters, remains available to watch on the website YouTube, a subsidiary of Google.

Organiser Masoud Alam said: "Our next protest will be at the offices of Google and YouTube across the world. We are looking to ban this film.

"This is not freedom of expression, there is a limit for that. This insult of the Prophet will not be allowed.

This is happening this Thursday

Soldiers risk court martial in first march on Houses of Parliament since Cromwell: More than 400 troops to protest over axeing of Fusiliers

From what I understand, it has more far reaching reasons than just cutting the Fusiliers.

"More than 400 serving and retired troops will this week descend on Parliament to confront David Cameron in a protest unprecedented in the history of the British Army.
Officers and soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers will mount the Army’s first picket of the Palace of Westminster on Thursday after the Government axed its second battalion.
Despite being threatened with court martial, serving soldiers are due to join their retired colleagues on the march, which coincides with a Parliamentary debate about defence cuts........"

15 Harayana Protests IndiaInk Blog480

A protest in Rohtak on Monday condemning the rising incidents of rape and violence against women in Haryana.

In Haryana, where a number of high-profile rape cases have attracted national attention in recent weeks, 800 protesters took to the streets on Monday to demand better policing and a safer environment for women.

“Women are no longer ready to take this kind of treatment meted out by a patriarchal system and a government that connives with the accused because they are the powerful,” said Shabnam Hashmi, a trustee at Anhad, a human rights group that works in the Mewat region of Haryana.

Several rape cases reported in Haryana in recent weeks have attracted widespread attention for their severity, the fact that the victims were from lower castes than their attackers and a “blame the victim” response from local officials and village councils. Last week a teenage girl committed suicide after being raped, by setting herself on fire, and another victim’s father killed himself after he was shown a video of his daughter being raped.

While activists and local media have repeatedly quoted a figure of 17 rapes in Haryana in the past month, that number is probably low. There were 733 cases of rape reported in Haryana, population 25 million, in 2011, or an average of 61 a month, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau.

Over the last year, the Haryana government has been criticized for their response a number of high-profile rapes and the state’s seeming inability to protect women. The Haryana spokesman for the Congress Party, Dharambir Goyat, was quoted as saying that he thought 90 percent of rapes were consensual, but he was later rebuked by the party for his statement.

On Monday, the Haryana Congress legislator Sampat Singh said, “Haryana has progressed economically, but it has not developed mentally and intellectually, leading to rising incidences of rape in the state.” Meanwhile, the West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, said that the increase in rapes in India could be attributed to the fact that men and women interact with each other more freely than before.

Monday’s rally was led by the All-India Democratic Women’s Association, who were joined by the All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch, the National Federation of Indian Women and the Center for Social Research.

Protesters in Rohtak held a public meeting on Monday where activists discussed possible solutions, while the families of rape victims shared their stories. After the meeting, they marched to the district commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum that demanded the government ensure quick and fair investigations into rape cases, set up fast-track courts to deal with sexual assault and rape cases and create more effective police forces.

“The protest was meant to express our anger and dissatisfaction at the Haryana government who has yet not arrested many rapists, and to pressurize the government to act,” said Ranjana Kumari, director of the Center for Social Research, who attended the protest.

The police attacked the crowd with sticks, she said, which caused a stampede that injured three people. “What was a peaceful meeting suddenly turned violent,” Ms. Kumari said.

In Delhi, the National Federation of Indian Women held a rally in a show of support for women of the Dalit caste, many of whom are victims of rape in Haryana.

“In this country, the biggest challenge for women is to safeguard their right to be born, and from that stage onwards women face all sorts of discrimination,” said Annie Raja, general secretary of the National Federation of Indian Women. “Even though internationally we have a reputation to be a developing country with prospects for economic growth, but for the women of this country, day by day we are living a more frightened life.”

Ms. Raja said that while each successive government promises to put in place new legislation to safeguard women, the government fails to enforce existing laws.

What especially angers women’s rights groups is the local authorities’ penchant for blaming the rapes on the victims. In September, a member of the state’s khap panchayat, a self-appointed council of village heads, said that in order to curb such crimes the marriage age should be lowered to 16, from 18, so that women won’t be tempted to satisfy their sexual urges elsewhere. Balwan Singh Nain, a 48-year-old farmer and khap member, told India Ink, “Women maintain a family’s honor. Not men. If she cannot keep her honor, it is solely her fault.”

Activists contend that the presence of khap panchayats undermines the system of law and order in the state of Haryana. “The problem is not just the numbers of women who are getting raped but the discourse after the rape and the response of the state,” said Kavita Srivastava, national secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, who attended the protest in Rohtak. “The khap panchayats are not just an embarrassment but part of the problem – they are reinforcing the unlawful behavior of these men.”

Those who report rapes often find themselves shunned by the local authorities. In a recent case that came to light on Saturday, a 13-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly raped over a period of four months by a fruit vendor outside her school in Fatehbad, a town in Haryana. When the girl’s mother lodged a complaint against the man, the school authorities reacted by expelling the girl and her two younger sisters. On Sunday, the school authorities said the three sisters had left the school on their own. However, after the girl underwent a medical examination that confirmed that she had been raped, the suspect was arrested.

“The whole attitude of the police is so anti-women,” said Ms. Srivastava. “There is the breakdown of the criminal justice system on one hand and the lack of an enabling environment for women on the other. In this kind of environment there can be no justice.”

On Friday, the Haryana government announced several measures designed to reduce the incidence of crimes against women, including an increase in police patrols in rural areas. The government also opened a 24-hour hotline for women in the police control room in Panchkula district and is planning to set up one in every district.

“The idea is that if any woman calls saying that they have been harassed on the street, at college or elsewhere, we will send police help immediately,” said Meenakshi Sharma, a female constable who answered the women’s hotline in Panchkula, which has yet to receive any calls for help.

Ms. Sharma said that they did not receive any special training for manning the hotline, which is one reason that activists are dubious about the efficacy of such measures. “It is too little and too late,” said Ms. Kumari of the Center for Social Research. “Having a helpline is not enough. There has to be somebody on the other side to provide help. The Haryana police have to become much more effective if it hopes to actually protect these women.”

Four women from the Occupy movement chained themselves to the pulpit in St Paul’s Cathedral last night in a bid to force the church’s leadership to “stop sitting on the fence and join the fight against rising inequality in the UK and beyond”.

The Very Reverend Dr David Ison, Dean of St Paul’s, said he was taking Evensong when “four young women dressed in white” staged their protest.

Burma’s president blocked a world Islamic body from opening an office in the nation, an official said Monday, bowing to rallies against its efforts to help Muslims in unrest-hit Arakan state.

“The president will not allow an OIC [Organisation of the Islamic Conference] office because it is not in accordance with the people’s desires,” said an official from President Thein Sein’s office, after thousands of monks held the latest protests against the Islamic organisation in two major cities on Monday.

The decision broke as thousands of monks took to the streets in Burma’s two main cities on Monday to protest against a world Islamic body’s attempts to help Muslim Rohingya in unrest-hit Arakan state, organisers said.

Around 3,000 maroon-robed clerics, some shouting and holding banners reading “No OIC”, marched through downtown Rangoon, according to an AFP photographer, in the latest rally against the Islamic organisation.

Thousands more protested in the country’s second-largest city Mandalay and in a further demonstration in the town of Pagukku district in Magway division in central Burma, according to organisers.

“We cannot accept any OIC office here,” Oattamathara, a monk leading the Mandalay protest, told AFP. He said demonstrators wanted clear assurances from government that the 57-member OIC would not be allowed to operate in the country.

Sectarian tensions are running high following Buddhist-Rohingya clashes in June in western Arakan state which left dozens of people dead and forced tens of thousands more to seek refuge in temporary shelters.

Monks were at the vanguard of a 2007 pro-democracy uprising that was brutally crushed by the former junta. They have been involved in a series of protests against the OIC and Burma’s 800,000 stateless Rohingya.

Members of the OIC, the top world Muslim body, toured Arakan state last month after accusations from rights groups that security forces opened fire on Rohingya during the sectarian unrest, prompting concern across the Islamic world.

Burma’s Rohingya, who speak a dialect similar to one in neighbouring Bangladesh, are seen by the government and many Burmese as illegal immigrants.

The tensions in Arakan state have spread to neighbouring Bangladesh, where police said recently they had arrested nearly 300 people in connection with a wave of violence targeting Buddhist homes and temples.

Hundreds of people in Haiti have protested against the high cost of living and called for the resignation of President Michel Martelly.

In a march through the capital, Port-au-Prince, opposition supporters and other demonstrators accused the president of corruption.

They also said he had failed to deliver on his promises to alleviate poverty.

Mr Martelly took office last year promising a fresh start for Haiti, devastated by an earthquake in 2010.

Haiti - which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic - is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere.

President Martelly came into power in May 2011, with 68% of the vote in a run off.

The former pop star vowed to bridge the gap between Haiti's tragic past with the aspirations of a new generation.

But opposition demonstrators say he wasted public money in luxury vehicles and international trips.

"Martelly is wasting the meagre resources of the country," said Edner Rosier, one of the organisers of the protest.
Cholera epidemic

His government had also promised to cover the costs of school tuition, a measure which would have helped the country's poorest, the opposition says.

Mr Martelly's government says it is addressing the problem of high living costs.

A commission was set up last month to work out measures to curb the cost of food and other essentials.

The opposition says it has planned other demonstrations across Haiti for the next days.

On Friday, the United Nations renewed the mandate of its peacekeeping force in the country, but decided to cut its size.

The force became hugely unpopular after an outbreak of cholera, which Haitians said blamed on foreign peacekeepers.

The epidemic killed more than 7,000 people in the Caribbean country.
