So, re them outing this TPP shit, and organising the petition - what might be their motivation?

I don't think its just the TPP thing but everything that Avaaz does is about giving people the impression of democracy and that things are normal etc.
Just as unions are there to placate the masses so is Avaaz.

They may have specific motives but I think they are in the pipeline for later issues, particularly when it comes to the EU.

The clicktivism mentioned by novum here is basically what its all about imho.
Avaaz has no teeth because those running it actually get to choose which topics they push etc.
The way they clamped down quickly on the people who had a gripe about fractional reserve banking convinced me totally.
If they were genuine then that would be something top of the agenda...getting govt treasuries to do what treasuries are supposed to do is hardly 'radical'.

Can anyone tell me the last online petition that made a difference?

And can anyone tell me how hitting the streets worked out in Argentina?

Examples of the Power of Online Activism

These days it's hard to imagine significant change happening that's not greatly influenced by so-called armchair "slacktivists." Web 2.0 activism has transformed the power structure, putting power in the hands of the people and forcing authorities to be accountable like never before. The frustrations with G.W. Bush and the subsequent enthusiasm, fundraising, and election of Obama and a Democrat-controlled Congress are well-documented examples fueled by online petitions and other online activism.

While most successful online actions never attain such recognition, here are a few lesser known examples where online petitions played a key role:

Laura Ling and Euna Lee Freed
In March of 2009, independent journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were imprisoned in North Korea, charged with grave crimes against the state, and sentenced to 12 years of hard labor. Their friends and family rallied to bring attention to their plight, and created petitions on Care2 to raise awareness and call on North Korea to free the women. Close to 90,000 people signed these petitions, helping to keep the story in the national spotlight for months. In August, former President Bill Clinton traveled to North Korea and negotiated Laura and Euna's release. Read more here as well as Laura Ling's thank you letter to Care2 petition signers.

US Military Changes Course
When Sergeant Gwen Beberg attempted to take home a dog she had saved off the streets of Baghdad as a puppy, the US military confiscated the dog to destroy it. A friend helped her start a Care2 petition that quickly gained 70,000 signatures and made headlines around the world. The US Military responded to the outcry, changed course, and returned "Ratchet", the dog, to Beberg. They now live at home in Minneapolis.

David and Sean Goldman Reunited
David Goldman's son Sean was abducted by his biological mother and taken to Brazil against international law five years ago, and David has been fighting to bring him home ever since. His friends started a petition on Care2 to help his cause, and 60,000 people from around the world signed. The magnitude of the petition helped spawn rallies and media attention, and eventually David received support from the U.S. Congress and the Obama Administration. On Christmas Eve, 2009, David and Sean were finally reunited.

Roxana Saberi Freed
Roxana Saberi, an American journalist with dual Iranian-American citizenship, was arrested in Iran in late January 2009 and imprisoned without charges for over a month. In April, based on a closed, one-day trial, Ms. Saberi was sentenced to eight years in prison for charges of spying for the U.S., a charge the White House vigorously denied as "baseless." Almost 28,000 activists signed the Care2 petition urging the Iranian government to free Roxana Saberi. These signatures and the resulting global spotlight put pressure on both the Iranian and US governments. On May 11th, American journalist Roxana Saberi walked out of prison in Iran, and is now free.

Matthew Shepard Act Passed
President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law as part of the Defense Authorization Act. The US Congress recognized the importance of this legislation after 25,000 Care2 members signed petitions and called their members of Congress to urge them to support this important piece of legislation.

HIV Travel Ban Lifted
For 22 years people with HIV/AIDS were banned from entering the U.S. Thousands of Care2 members, along with our nonprofit partners, petitioned the Obama administration to end this fear-based policy... and it worked the repeal of this ban is now in effect.

EPA Regulates Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Thousands of Care2 members have submitted signatures to the Environmental Protection Agency in the last few years urging the U.S. government to regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This past September, the EPA announced a proposal to get us there, requiring large power plants and industrial facilities to obtain operating permits to cover their emissions, with an annual threshold of 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Read more about this promising first step.

Climate Bill Passes House
In joint campaigns with environmental groups and unions, Care2 members have sent hundreds of thousands of messages to their legislators calling for them to pass strong climate change legislation and our voices are finally being heard. Last June, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a comprehensive climate change bill called the American Clean Energy Security Act.

Obama Admin Protects Roadless Forests
In just two weeks, more than 8,000 Care2 members sent letters to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, urging him to take action to stop a Bush-era plan to open up old-growth forests in Oregon to clearcutting. The Obama administration listened and agreed!

I didn't know any of the above, btw, but just looked it up out of curiosity.

If there's a chance it will make a difference, it's got to be worth a go, don't you think?

It depends. If it's the only thing people do to bring about change (and I suspect this to be the case for the majority of signatories) then 'no'. If it's appealing to politicians then 'NO!', that's about as empowering as voting!

Speaking of online petitions... just ran across one that involves a US military woman asking for asylum in Canada because she has be threatened with deportation and prosecution because she refuses to go to war for the government. I think Canada should grant it and flip the US off while many others are calling her a criminal for going AWOL.

I was meaning in the instance of this TPP revelation in the OP.

I'm not trying to put anybody on the spot btw, but often I think I'd like to do something effective, except I'm not sure how to. So any suggestions could prove helpful.

Aye, it is... this woman only changed her mind AFTER she went to Iraq and saw what the US was doing though. So it's a bit more than just being that brain dead that you're surprised when asked to go to war.

Oddly, for an organisation that receives no governmental or corporate funding,(1) Avaaz received over $6.7 million in 2010, and paid its President over $180,000 as a salary (still feel good about donating?). On top of this, in 2010 Avaaz gave Res Publica (more on them later) a $100,000 grant. Avaaz is doing extremely well considering this and the fact that it was established relatively recently, in 2006. Where is all of this money coming from?

Dumbarse watch doesn't know what the fuck it's talking about and thats typical of cunts on the internet accepting the bullshit at face value.

Because someone who has worked for any organization that is linked with a well know internet name they are automatically dismissed and have no credibility. 'They' must be working for the agenda, has to be doesn't, guilt by association, and all that..
"Since 2009, Avaaz has not taken donations from foundations or corporations, nor has it accepted payments of more than $5,000 (£3,100). Instead, it relies simply on the generosity of individual members, who have now raised over $20m (£12.4m)."[2] In 2011 it had around 50 staff.[2]

You wouldn't have known anything about it had it not been for avaaz. The multinational corporations would just seal your fate, without your knowledge.

Just be inactive, instead of pro active.

Cherry picking selected issues of an organization and the taring everything they do as part of a conspiracy is typical of indivuals who can't use critical thinking.

Whats the beef, is it because you consider them to be JEWS, so they cant be credible and must be working for the agenda. Thats what Icke promoted awhile ago.

Perhaps there is another group of wealthy people who dont want that to happen, as their faces have been put on the dartboard too, and the others want to bring them down.

So perhaps this is rich peoples war :zorro:

And this is about trying to mobilise the masses, get them onside with the first group.

Just a guess.

Slacktivism.
Slacktivism (sometimes slactivism or slackervism) is a portmanteau of the words slacker and activism. The word is usually considered a pejorative term that describes "feel-good" measures, in support of an issue or social cause, that have little or no practical effect other than to make the person doing it feel some amount of satisfaction. The acts tend to require minimal personal effort from the slacktivist. The underlying assumption being promoted by the term is that these low cost efforts substitute for more substantive actions rather than supplementing them, although this assumption has not been borne out by research.[1]

Slacktivist activities include signing Internet petitions,[2] joining a community organization without contributing to the organization's efforts, copying and pasting of Social Network statuses or messages or altering one's personal data or avatar on social network services. Research is beginning to explore the connection between the concept and modern activism/advocacy, as groups are increasingly using social media to facilitate civic engagement and collective action.[3]

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS describes the term "slacktivist", saying it "posits that people who support a cause by performing simple measures are not truly engaged or devoted to making a change".[4]
Defense and criticism

Despite the connotations of the term, a recent correlational study conducted by Georgetown University entitled “The Dynamics of Cause Engagement” determined that so-called slacktivists are indeed “more likely to take meaningful actions.”[7] Notably, “slacktivists participate in more than twice as many activities as people who don’t engage in slacktivism, and their actions “have a higher potential to influence others.”[7] Cited benefits of slacktivism in achieving clear objectives include creating a secure, low cost, effective means of organizing that are environmentally friendly.[8] These "social champions" have the ability to directly link social media engagement with responsiveness, leveraging their transparent dialogue into economic, social or political action.[1]

Yet skepticism of slacktivism’s value certainly exists. Particularly, some argue that it entails an underlying assumption that all problems can be seamlessly fixed using social media, and while this may be true for local issues, slacktivism could prove ineffective for solving global predicaments.[9] In turn, organizationally speaking, slacktivism may result in a “waste of resources, lack of productivity and a risk of liability for the employer.”[10] An NPR piece from 2009 also astutely asks whether "the publicity gains gained through this greater reliance on new media [are] worth the organizational losses that traditional activists entities are likely to suffer, as ordinary people would begin to turn away from conventional (and proven) forms of activism." [11]

Criticism of slacktivism often involves the idea that internet activities are ineffective, and/or that they prevent or lessen political participation in real life. However, as many studies on slacktivism relate only to a specific case or campaign, it is difficult to find an exact percentage of slacktivist actions that reach a stated goal. In addition, studies suggest that "fears of Internet activities supplanting real life activity are unsubstantiated," in that they do not cause a negative or positive effect on political participation.[12]

Malcolm Gladwell, in his October 2010 New Yorker Article, lambasted those who compare social media "revolutions" with actual activism that challenges the status quo ante. He argues that today's social media campaigns can't compare with activism that takes place on the ground, using the Greensboro sit-ins as an example of what real, high-risk activism looks like. "As the historian Robert Darnton has written, “The marvels of communication technology in the present have produced a false consciousness about the past—even a sense that communication has no history, or had nothing of importance to consider before the days of television and the Internet.” But there is something else at work here, in the outsized enthusiasm for social media. Fifty years after one of the most extraordinary episodes of social upheaval in American history, we seem to have forgotten what activism is.[13] In response to his criticism, Mirani argues that he might be right if activism is defined only as sit-ins, taking direct actions, and confrontations on the streets. However, if activism is about arousing awareness of people, changing people's minds, and influencing opinions across the world, then 'the revolution will be indeed be tweeted'.[14]

In a March 2012 Financial Times article, referring to efforts to address the on-going violence related to the Lord's Resistance Army, Matthew Green wrote that the slactivists behind the Kony 2012 video had "achieved more with their 30-minute video than battalions of diplomats, NGO workers and journalists have since the conflict began 26 years ago" [15]

They are just ideas Boots, trains of thoughts. I am anti-corporation, like you.

Yes personally I dont buy into AGW, I have followed the money and it leads to who I think is perhaps one of the most powerful corporations on the planet, being Goldman Sachs. And I am not alone in stating that GS is very powerful.

Money And Power How Goldman Sachs Came To Rule The World

So if an organisation supports AGW I will bring it up and cant help but have suspicions.

Has nothing to do with Jews. Those guys i listed are heavily into some of the same agendas and very vocal about it publicly, thats why I listed their feeds. One is a british MP of course, so in my mind they work for the elite.

As for listening to twitter...twitter is only the vehicle, I am reading what the people in those positions are saying themselves, not third party commentary. They say the same things elsewhere also.
