With the anniversary of September 11^th literally just around the corner, unanswered questions still remain for families who lost loved ones during the tragic event, as well as from families who lost them after the incident. Often times the public forgets that it wasn't only just the 2,996 lives lost during the attacks on 9/11 but there were also victims in the following weeks, months, even years after 9/11 from exposure.

In 2010 it was said that there were 18,462 people treated for 9/11 illnesses, and medical professionals fear the toll will continue to rise as nearly 60,000 people were put at risk from inhaling fumes and dust particles after the World Trade Center collapse. A Federal claim made says there is no link between the events on September 11^th and the months following it to the sudden rise in cancer, breathing problems, asthma development in people exposed to the debris fields and dust exposure...and not just human victims either, animals have gone on to suffer as well as they were exposed to the same substances as they searched side by side with their human counterparts.

I spoke to one woman, who for the time being will remain anonymous. She is from North Carolina, the widow of a U.S. Marine called on to help with the search & rescue, and cleanup in the days following the attacks. She has an 10 year old little girl who never got the chance to meet her father. I knew this family before the attacks in September, I knew the husband and father before he was ever a husband, before he was a father. When the events began to unfold in New York, he told me there was a chance he was going to go overseas... but that order never came in, a different one did though, he was requested to help with rescue and recovery as well as some cleanup. He was directly exposed to the debris, as were many first responders and other people. He came home, but he wouldn't see his daughters birth. He died from exposure to chemicals and toxins that ground zero was laden with, inhaling them, shifting through them to look for potential survivors. While speaking to his wife she told me how painful it was for him, some days it hurt to breathe, others it was a fight to make it through the day without an asthma like attack. She still searches for answers as his death was not ruled by the coroner, or the doctors who had been treating him, as something that could possibly be linked in any way to his efforts in New York. She hopes to one day be able to tell their daughter what happened to daddy, why he isn't there...but, for right now, their daughter knows her dad was a hero. He went when he was called upon to search the rubble, to dig through debris and help people. Zero survivors were rescued from the total destruction of the WTC, but he did what any person would have done in his shoes, he searched until there was nothing left to search.

Not only are questions going unanswered but why people are still becoming sick and dying from the exposure following this incident. But also, questions still remain about the incident itself.

Never in the 100 year history of steal framed buildings has one collapsed, let alone into it's own footprint. But on September 11^th 2001, history was made when three (3) steel framed buildings collapsed, into their own footprint within hours of each other. All three were leased by the same man. And all three fell in exactly the same way.

In the 100 year history of steel framed buildings, none have ever collapsed due to fire. But on September 11^th 2001, three (3) steel framed buildings collapsed at free-fall speeds, due to fire weakening the steel. They took not quite 15 seconds to do so. The law of conservation of momentum would have predicted approximately 45 seconds had there been any resistance to the collapse at each floor. But there was no resistance when they all went diving symmetrically into their own footprints.

Steel framed buildings have had fires before. To name a few, there was the One Meridian Plaza, a 38 floor skyscraper in Philadelphia. On February 23, 1991 a fire started on the 22^nd floor. It raged, uncontrollably for 18 hours, gutting eight floors and causing approximately $100 million USD in property loss. There was granite cracking, failures of panel connections, and windows breaking. The fire was severe, and the duration long. But the building did not collapse, not even part of the building came down.

Then there is the First Interstate Bank, a 62 story skyscraper in Los Angeles. On May 4, 1988 in the wee hours of the morning, 64 fire companies were battling a blaze which lasted for 3 ½ hours. Windows broke, large flames came out of the building, water damage resulted from the efforts of the fire departments battling the blaze on floors lower than the flames. The fire gutted offices from floors 12 to 16, there was extensive smoke damage. Roughly $200 million USD resulted in property loss.

On February 9, 2009 in Beijing a nearly completed 520 foot tall skyscraper caught fire around 8 PM. It was entirely engulfed within 20 minutes and burned until midnight. The fire extended across all floors for a period of time, burning uncontrolled for hours. And yet, no large portion of the structure fell.

However, on September 11^th, 2001 three steel framed buildings collapsed. All at nearly free-fall speeds. All in a symmetrical style. All into their own footprints. Steel turned to dust. Steel melted and could be found later on at ground zero during rescue and cleanup efforts. Was this just coincidence?

Besides the three buildings of the World Trade Center, there was another building attacked that day. The Pentagon, a secure and protected symbol of the United States. Questions still remain about what happened there, reports have come in of a small hole in the side of the building, and then the top collapsing in creating a larger hole. In photographs from that day you can clearly see office areas, desks, computers still intact on the sides. What really hit the pentagon? Can a Boeing 757 really hit that building and leave office supplies intact on the sides of the hole? There are reports that a huge jetliner crashed into the building in question, but shock and disbelief followed as the building seemingly swallowed this plane, vanishing during the crash. For some, the lack of crash debris outside as well as the lack of an impact impression closely matching that of a 757 were and are still red flags indicating the involvement of something entirely different than an airliner. So what really happened?

And lets not forget about United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11^th. A Boeing 757 with the capacity of 182 passengers, on the day in question, it only carried 37 passengers and seven crew. Captain Jason Dahl was in charge that day, it left the airport at 8:42 AM and reached a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet (11,000 m) at just about the same time United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. No one is quite sure what happened mid-air, or where the remains of the plane were when it struck ground. It was broken into pieces of course, but what brought the plane down? Was it the struggle from passengers to regain control, or was it something else? The impact angel suggests a steep plunge into the ground, and evidence supports trauma to the plane before impact. So what really happened on that unforgettable morning 11 years ago?

These are just a few of the incidents that happened on that day that pose question that have yet to be sufficiently answered. What really happened on September 11^th, 2001... I don't know, the world may never know. What is still happening to people present in New York during and following the incident that occurred? Your guess is as good as mine. Someday I hope someone who does know though comes forward and is willing to tell us what happened and why so many people had to die, why people are still dying and why there are children growing up without their parent(s).
