I have no opinion on Thatcher personally, but I saw the effect of her policies on the town that Sketti and I grew up in.

I used to be a taxi driver in Corby before the steelworks shut down. The place was buzzing, every night everywhere was busy, a Thursday nights takings were almost as good as a Saturday night in those days, even during during the week was very profitable. . Local businesses thrived on the money circulating around, so it wasn't just the 11,000 people layed off that suffered. That closure hit a lot of people in a 50 mile-radius.
The pubs were full, the cafes were full, the shops were full, and apparently the order book was full when they closed the Works down.

How much subsidy would it have taken to keep that going? Compared to the consequences since?
