Woolwich attack: MI5 'offered job to suspect'

MI5 asked Woolwich murder suspect Michael Adebolajo if he wanted to work for them about six months before the killing, a childhood friend has said.

Abu Nusaybah told BBC Newsnight his friend - one of two men arrested after Drummer Lee Rigby's murder in south-east London on Wednesday - had rejected the approach from the security service.

The BBC could not obtain any confirmation from Whitehall sources.

Abu Nusaybah was arrested at the BBC after giving the interview.

The Met Police said a 31-year-old man had been arrested at 21:30 BST on Friday in relation to suspected terrorism offences and search warrants were being executed at two homes in east London.

The arrest was not directly related to the murder of Drummer Rigby, it said.

The soldier was killed in front of dozens of people near Woolwich Barracks, where he was based, on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, who was also arrested at the scene, remain in hospital after being shot by police.

'Bugging me'
In his Newsnight interview, Abu Nusaybah said he thought "a change" had taken place in his friend after his detention by security forces on a trip to Kenya last year.

Abu Nusaybah said Mr Adebolajo suggested he had been physically and sexually abused during an interrogation in a prison cell in the African country.

After this, he became withdrawn "and less talkative - he wasn't his bubbly self", Abu Nusaybah added.

He said Mr Adebolajo also told him that, upon his return, he was "followed up by MI5" who were "knocking on his door".

He was "basically being harassed", Abu Nusaybah said.

He added: "His wording was, 'They are bugging me - they won't leave me alone.'

"He mentioned initially they wanted to ask him if he knew certain individuals.

"But after him saying that he didn't know these individuals, what he said was they asked him if he would be interested in working for them.

"He was explicit in that he refused to work for them but he did confirm he didn't know the individuals."

Newsnight reporter Richard Watson said that, in general terms, it was not out of the ordinary for the security service to approach people for information or even to act as covert sources.

Mr Adebolajo, 28, originally from Romford, east London, and fellow suspect Michael Adebowale, 22, of Greenwich, south-east London, had been known to MI5 for eight years, Whitehall sources told the BBC on Thursday.

If Mi5 approaches you , you surely keep your lips stum or get bumped off. They are a secret service type thing ,.......they don't just approach random people and say 'come and work with us'

The people like these two attackers are always known to the authorities after the fact simply because the authorities do not want to admit that there are people who will do stuff like this that they have no idea about

If they are on a watch list then why not turn up at there door and say 'we're watching you'

Because they are not on a watch list , they aren't known to authorities

So Dawn, they're taking flack for having supposedly had these people on the radar for 8 years...

David Cameron yesterday ordered an urgent review into what MI5 had gleaned about the two men and whether any chances were missed of intercepting them before the murder in Woolwich, south London.

...but you think that's pretence because it would be more embarrasing for them to admit they didn't know them?

There are photo's published of Adebolajo being arrested some time ago at a Muslim rally. He allegedly was speaking there about how they should have the right to behead insulters of Islam.

However i do think it is 'odd' that any time a person/group does something like this the authorities come out and say 'yes they were known to us they were on the watch list' ............so everyone who blows stuff up or hacks peoples heads off were known to them?

If they are known to them why don't they stop them?

I have not heard/seen/read anything about him Adebolajo ,(Is that the mans surname?) being arrested at a muslim rally . Your link is to a Daily Mail article .............and they tell the truth all the time don't they?

Maybe because the authorities benefit from this sort of incident. Maybe the same reason that the US ignored warnings about 9/11. This is still called a ‘conspiracy theory’ by Wikipedia:

the authorities have lots of people on lists as being a possible threat - the thing is our whole pesky system does not allow people to usually be arrested without having first committed a crime - obv some exceptions do happen and allsorts of people get picked up for the most tenuous of reasons - but on the whole until someone does something arrestable they can but monitor them.

luckily the daily mail readership and others are calling for people to be arrested and deported before actual crimes are committed... le sigh

Yes, that's why I said 'allegedly' re what was going on there, because I don't know and I wouldn't necessarily take their word for it. But he was definitely photographed being arrested at a Muslim rally. So he will have been known of.
