The Abominable Phenomenon is back from the dead.....
taking a fresh approach now actually writing some songs and having a bit of a sing! I've not written many songs but this is probably the best one I've done.
This one was partly inspired by a mate of mine who was stupid enough to jump off a cliff in Wales and narrowly avoided death.

Great tune mate, so well mixed and mastered too.

I wouldn't exactly say you've got a 'singing' voice, but it cuts through the music brilliantly and tells the story perfectly.

Keep 'em coming
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

That's why I said there's a punk vibe, the overall sound supports that and the vocals are very much in punk style, close enough with rough on the edges. Sound good on a song like this one. I like it. :yup:

Are the drums programmed btw? The song would be even better if it had actual drumtrack. I would make it maybe 10-15bpm faster, guitar and/or bass could be bit stronger, mild overdrive for bass, bit of distortion to guitar, more gain on both to make them sound like more "in your face." :D

Yes it's programmed drums. Everything is except the guitar and vocals.
I'd love you to do some drums for me.... all I need is a decent stereo mic digital recording.... if you've got the gear to do it we can have a bit of a bash!

Any time. I'm planning to make some new drumming videos possibly next week anyway, all I need to do it to test out the mixer I have and borrow some mics from my buddies. I need the song as mp3, if you can put a metronome track on top of it, it would make things even easier.

Great.... you know how to mic up a stereo pair in XY formation?

Naturally I do know how to do that. I wasn't born yesterday you know. :chuckle: :norty: Jokes aside, I use five tracks to record the drums. I have dynamic close mics for bassdrums and snare and then a pair of overheads. Either the usual XY, or then the wide stereo style, one on each side, what was that called? It had some fancy name...

Then there's the old school drum recording trick to put one overhead straight above the snare drum, facing in the center of the drum and have that was it three or four drumstick lengths away, then put the other one about a meter behind and bit over the biggest floor tom, facing the hi-hat. I haven't tried this myself, but if Bonzo had such mic'ing in studio, I might as well try it out. The idea is that this placement catches more fuller sound that usual overhead pair does, back in the day before huge multi track mixers they invented all sorts of stuff to make the most out of few tracks. And my philosophy with recording drums is to make overheads and room mics be the main sound, close mics just help out with clarity and attack and make mixing easier. This of course requires that the drums are tuned properly and searching for right sounds takes longer.

Anyway, I'll be using five mics which record into a single stereo track. I can also mix the drums for you if you want? I have to do some mixing regardless as I'm not able to record separate tracks with my current equipment.

Yes... the fancy name of an A/B pair. :D
That's for catching more ambience. The X/Y pair is better for something more punchy.
If you wanna mix it that's cool. Saves me fucking about!
Can it do a 32-bit recording at 44.1kHz?

I'm fairly certain that that's the preset... It can also be 24bit, I haven't touched the settings as they work just fine but I can check how it was. I have Cubase SX5 if I remember correctly and that can also do the 48khz stuff, which I have never found a real use for actually.

Sure I'll mix it for you. I have to tinker with the mixer in any case as its going to merge the tracks into one stereo so the input signal must be as good as it gets. One trick I like to use if I have the time is to make sample tracks for bassdrums and snare. Using samples from the very same drums I'm using. I can't use trigger emulation or stuff like that as its just one stereo in so I need to copy and paste every sample by hand. Its not difficult but time consuming but it makes mixing so much easier... Another neat trick is to duplicate the drumtrack say, three times and use them to mix low/mid/high independently of each other. :D I don't think I need to do that on your songs as its not super fast, the drums wont get "fuzzy" on that kind of songs.

If you've got Cubase SX5 you should be able to alter the bit rate in the 'project' tab at the top. (I think!)
48kHz is used in TV and films.
Be wary of phase issues mixing from multiple sources!
