Morrissey: Olympic Spirit 'Like Nazi Germany'
Singer Morrissey has slammed the coverage of the London 2012 Olympics for its "blustering jingoism" - and likened the "foul patriotism" to the Germany of the Nazis.
In a statement posted on True To You - an online Morrissey fanzine - the former frontman of The Smiths outlined his distaste for the media attention given to the royal family and the sense of British spirit.
He goes on to say that the "spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain", as a result of the Olympics coverage.
The statement reads: "I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism?
"The 'dazzling royals' have, quite naturally, hijacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness.
"As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters.
"Meanwhile, the British media present 24-hour coverage of the 'dazzling royals', laughing as they lavishly spend, as if such coverage is certain to make British society feel fully whole."
He added: "s I recently drove through Greece I noticed repeated graffiti seemingly everywhere on every available wall. In large blue letters it said: 'WAKE UP WAKE UP'.
"It could almost have been written with the British public in mind, because although the spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain, the 2013 grotesque inevitability of Lord and Lady Beckham (with Sir Jamie Horrible close at heel) is, believe me, a fate worse than life."
Morrissey was also heavily critical of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June, comparing her reign to a dictatorship and describing the celebrations as "a new lesson in the force of tyranny".
I don't disagree with anything he's said here, however, I have to admit that I've still enjoyed the sporting element.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

Morrissey's auntie used to work in The Manchester University students' union cafeteria. She always liked to tell us tales about "our Steven".
I would remind people, however, that this is the same Morrissey who has been quite happy to drape himself in the Union Jack when it suits him and also said he feels like a foreigner in Britain these days.

Doesn't he wear it with irony?
He lives in America so he is pretty much a foreigner...!
St.Retford is hardly immigrant central if he's on about 'home'... near the iron bridge where he kissed & ended up with sore lips.
Still, as much as I like The Smiths, Mozza is a bit of a tosspot & a hypocrite, and drove Johnny Marr away... probably loved him. /pacifist seen at boxing match.. is that hypocritical?

No, he wasn't being "ironic", that's just what fans with leftie leanings tell themselves to make it OK.
There was more to the quote about him "feeling like a foreigner" than simply not being resident when he was interviewed by the NME in 2007: "Although I don't have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears. So the price is enormous. If you travel to Germany, it's still absolutely Germany. If you travel to Sweden, it still has a Swedish identity. But travel to England and you have no idea where you are."
Isn't it a bit rich of him to complain about alleged jingoism at the Olympics when he effectively says England is no longer England because there's too many johnny foreigners here?
