I was always drawn more to hill music than western. I suppose it's the Irish/Scots influences.
Try searching Youtube for The Transatlantic Sessions to hear how seamlessly both styles blend.

I also own a lovely wee Appalachian teardrop dulcimer which my son and I argued over for ages. You couldn't put it down to go get a drink without the other grabbing and hogging it. :D
