But the community is being consulted, right here right now.

A general "what'ya reckon?" or an actual consultation (poll/email vote)?

Consultation is the "what'd'ya reckon" bit.
From that discussion you form the options/proposals you vote on.
No?

So we have a top down model.

Do you suggest that if any other member was to put forward a suggestion it would not be discussed and decided upon because it wasn't proposed by a mod or admin?

I'd class this as a general '''what'ya reckon''...a testing of the water so to speak.

However, if you feel that an 'official' community vote is required on this matter before it is implemented (even as a trial), then thats ok by me.

No, I'm suggesting this suggestion has already been discussed at a certain level, then it's put to us. WUB made a great point about hierarchy on the Hillsborough thread.

I'm saying there is no clear process for such decision making.

Um the now defunct AGBFWSTDBTBF made a proposition that it be given smite god status in order to carry out it's campaign of karma terrorism adjustment.........it got nowhere. In fact there was a blatant attempt at co-opting the movement iirc.....

Are you saying a democratic community vote isn't a clear process for such decision making? Are you serious?

No. I'm saying the idea has been bounced around 'elsewhere', now it's being presented to 'us', and depending on whether we blow hot or cold then it may be put to a vote...but we'll probably have to discuss the voting process.

Having read through this thread now, I can honestly say I see more problems arising from opening to guests than it will ever justify.

Our main strength around here is the community spirit we have and that's mainly down to a complete change in how forums are generally moderated.
By introducing the guest posting option, we will have to do a complete u-turn on that and allow us mods to have free rule basically which goes against alot of what we stand for.... is what I'm trying to say coming across?

I don't know what else to add just now but that's just my initial thoughts.

So, just because the idea has been 'bounced around elsewhere' and is now being presented to this community as an issue to be voted on, in a completely democratic manner, does that make it less valid?

Pray tell, how would the anarchists decide on this one?

Whichever way you look at it, this place needs a serious boost.
Not many are joining, the majority of those that have joined don't even sign in let alone post.
It's sad to say, but things are very flat at the moment, stale, and have been for some weeks now.
I think people are getting bored.

Guest posting just might get something going, something happening, because this place badly needs it.

See this is where I get lost.
To me it doesn't matter if an idea was put forward by one person or tossed around and put forward by 10 people.
As long as it's up for open discussion and decision making before it's implemented or dismissed.

Nothing is imposed, no-one is demanding, put forward the pro's and cons and let people get to deciding.

We did the bit before about whether SZ should run with mods or not, the response was an overwhelming yes.
If there are instances of those mods abusing their position call it.

I genuinely see no issue here.

It just came to me because i was speaking to someone who posts on GLP, thats how i got the idea. They have guest posting as well as registered members there.

Then i mentioned it to frog, DG and abs, and then DG came into this thread pretty much straight after and put the idea out.

Not much to it really...was just an idea that went from my head, onto a screen and then out to the public forum quite quickly.

Even the mods, well 2 are for trying it, 2 are perhaps against at the moment.

p.s.
When we did all this stuff before at great length I asked to see examples of online communities successfully running in the way that was being proposed. I always open to learning new methods.
There were none to be offered.
That request is still open.

It's easy to snipe, it's harder to demonstrate how it can be done better.

It's a niggle more than an issue. It was insinuated that 'a discussion' had taken place regarding the karma points, were you involved, I wasn't!

Where was the chat about allowing guests?

Some mods seem to have already taken a position, suggesting mods have already discussed it before presenting it to 'us'.
