Ive been watching the series and in one episode there is a fight and the chieftain is killed.

In the show they then went on to burn the Earl on a ship which was his funeral, they also sacrifised a slave.

This made me wonder,if people still believed in Odin etc and the Norse religion today would these believers still sacrifise slaves when a chieftain died.

Do you think it is possible?

The sacrificing of attendants/slaves when a prominent individual died was common to many cultures.
Thankfully we've moved on a bit since then.

There's still a festival held in Lerwick, the Shetlands (Scotland), in January called Up Helly Aa which culminates in the burning of a replica Viking longship.
A while back they used to set the ship adrift but some govt plonker decided that was a danger to other ships and put a stop to it.

(It's all become tacky and touristy now of course).

It's quite an entertaining series.

I understand that many cultures practised human sacrifices.

It just made me wonder that's all, with all the seemingly pointless murders that take place.

If it was still practised when leaders died would we be any the wiser to it happening?

Total speculation i know, but based on historical fact as we know it.

haven't see it yet either, probably won't have much interest in it anyway, thought that maybe The Game Of Thrones would be a favorite of mine but it's not.
isn't vikings a story line and not just a documentary?

It appears to be another fictionalisation programme.
Not helpful if it's presented under the History banner imo.

Still many would argue that all 'history' is fictionalised I suppose.

It's most likely that the history channel have used the writings of Ahmad ibn Fadlan as historical evidence for certain parts of the series that portrays customs etc. Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a 10th century Arab traveler who could have been truthful or not?

I love Game of Thrones. I only saw one clip from Vikings which was on a show called The Soup which makes fun of TV shows. It didn't appeal to me.

Still never had chance to see 'Game of Thrones', but the books it's based on, the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series (the 1st of which is 'A Game of Thrones') are fantastic - highly recommend!!!

I don't know much about Vikings, but think a lot of the Mason symbolism bears striking similarities with aspects of the Kabala.

It would not make much sense to kill a slave/servant,isnt there a theory the ancient Egyptians did the same, which I also find highly unlikely ...
Tomb T is surrounded by the burial sites of 136 men and women who were buried at the same time as the king. Thought to be the king's retainers, an examination of some of the skeletons suggests they were strangled, making this an example of human sacrifice which is considered to be common with the pharaohs of this dynasty. This practice which seems to have ceased by the conclusion of the dynasty with shabtis taking the place of the bodies of actual people to aid the pharaohs with the work expected of them in the afterlife..

Or maybe they were murdered ?

It's my understanding that it was carried out to provide servants to the deceased in the afterlife.

It is known that the Egyptians believed in reincarnation or the transmigration of the soul. They thought the soul transmigrated from body to body and this was a reason why they embalmed the body in order to preserve it so that it could journey along with ka, an animating force that was believed to be counterpart of the body, which would accompany it in the next world or life. Ka might be considered equivalent to the term of soul. This establishes the dating of the concept of reincarnation back to the ancient Egyptian religion but many think it dates beyond antiquity..

Reincarnation is also a theme in Norse Mythology and was a common belief amongst the Vikings ...

There is no word corresponding exactly to the English terms "rebirth", "metempsychosis", "transmigration" or "reincarnation" in the traditional Buddhist languages of Pāli and Sanskrit: the entire process of change from one life to the next is called punarbhava (Sanskrit) or punabbhava (Pāli), literally "becoming again", or more briefly bhava, "becoming", while the state one is born into, the individual process of being born or coming into the world in any way, is referred to simply as "birth" (jāti). The entire universal process that gives rise to this is called saṃsāra...The word "reincarnation" derives from Latin, literally meaning, "entering the flesh again". The Greek equivalent metempsychosis (μετεμψύχωσις) roughly corresponds to the common English phrase "transmigration of the soul" and also usually connotes reincarnation after death,as either human, animal, though emphasising the continuity of the soul, not the flesh...Another Greek term sometimes used synonymously is palingenesis, "being born again"...
