If that mama decides to blow full force.....would the authorities give us any advance warning? Would USGS put anything up on their website for the likes of you and me to have a heads up? USGS regularly downgrade EQ's especially after their '6 week review'...hmmmmm? We'll see. HOWEVER...if she does go...early warning or not...you'll have 11-12 hours before the ash starts falling in the UK. Hope that helps!
Also Old Yella ain't the biggest 'supervolc'....have a look at Tambora or even Taupo....they're even bigger and still ACTIVE!

I'm not convinced they would actually be able to give us any warning.
Perhaps in some scenarios they could...but even then as you say, would they bother as warning people actually will have consequences.
IMHO the govt probably wouldn't get enough notice let alone act on it fast enough for anyone to actually get a warning.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there isn't someone out to get me. Just because there weren't so many earthquakes detected & reported previously doesn't mean they were necessarily occurring and going undetected / unreported - does it?

Or does it? :conf: :D

It does, yep lol.

Antarctica has a fair few quakes and even some volcanic activity going on.
Not that anyone pays much attention to it.

The interwebby has brought so much information to so many people now and so fast its staggering.

earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/increase_in_earthquakes.php

Its also true to state that human perception is based upon the effect it specifically has to humans.
www.odt.co.nz/campus/university-otago/15...al-dunedin-geologist

The bigger the body count the 'larger' the quakes 'appear' to be.

You can also apply the same viewpoint to things such as adverse weather events in places built in an area prone to such weather with badly constructed and located buildings and a rapidly growing population in the same area.
Katrina for example :)

The aluetian islands have some horrific earthquake activity yet hardly anyone lives there so it goes largely ignored.

Vanuatu is almost ALWAYS in the news for earthquakes, a google search alone tells you as much:

'vanuatu earthquake'
About 3,530,000 results (0.25 seconds)

For there to be any proper assessment of whats going on there must first of all be a suitable period of data gathering done.
For something like this it literally means several lifetimes worth of data before anything meaningful can be construed from the results.

Us humans have only just begun to collect meaningful data let alone make interpretations from it.
We will inevitably do so on a timescale that is meaningful to US not necessarily meaningful to the planet/mother nature/the universe that works on timescales of billions of years.

Our lifetimes themselves must correspondingly become longer for us to begin to actually come to a decent understanding and indeed, as our knowledge advances so will lifetimes increase as we augment our bodies and evolve.
This is our destiny imho and its actually not long off coming to a point of very rapid advance.

Have to agree with almost everything you have said there Andy
The first 'scientific'/recorded volcanic eruption of any note was way back in 1783(?) Krakatoa. In human terms that is a long way back...geologically..less than a blink of the eye. Anything previous to this is down to geology. As to EQ's...spot on..a much longer timescale has to be recorded. Having said that, a lot of very clever geology, physics and maths are done to give us some sort of 'possible' projections and understanding of tectonic plate movements, fractures, even 'frakking'.

Thank you for your contributions chaps. I will endeavour to keep up with updates of note.

To be honest here, its difficult to even know what is actually 'of note'.

I think earthquakes outside of the ring of fire no matter what their size are probably of more importance than just the size of the quake, especially those in the ring of fire / the usual well known fault lines.

I also think events like the mass animal deaths we saw at the start of this year are important, they might not be connected to earthquakes but all the same what went on in January with all those mass animal deaths was definitely not normal in the slightest.

Sorry silvershine I will have to disagree with your somewhat flippant and dismissive remark....I am not going to take issue with what you say, but I will come back with a comment just as flippant....it's just the depth that varies. :D

2nd paragraph....I am having a 'blonde' moment....I am confused...the ones in the ring of fire or the ones in the rest of the world are of more importance? Whichever one you chose, I am going to disagree with you :D .
As to the animal deaths...it's the pilot whales in particular in my view that can portend an EQ. There was a mass beaching of pilot whales in Japan the week before the 9.2. I remember telling my class that week to keep an eye on Japan, because something big was going to happen there before we met up the following Tuesday. Needles to say my mobile went beserk on the Friday morning with txt messages...but even I didn't expect one of that magnitude, which within I believe 30 minutes was causing the Yellowstone seismos to go ballistic.

Sorry I should've left the extra text out :)

I meant that IMHO I think that earthquakes of any size that are outside of fault zones are the interesting ones, even if they are small.

As for the animal deaths, it was far more than just marine events iirc in January and even that could be down to all that weird sonar testing that was going on. What bugged me was the sheer volume of creatures both in and out of the water and even birds...the whole thing was really freaky and I'm normally the sort of guy who doesn't get worked up about much so to speak ;)

Had a man called Pedro Gaete ,talking that Haarp will be used between 12 to 16 of October, in Chile,
And later probably in March. Geoterrorism.
Gave interesting explanation of how it all works.

Pedro Gaete

EDIT: Therer is also a group of Brazilian young men, who have foretold one week in advance if we in Chile will
have an earthqucke, where and how strong it will be. They have been right 90% of the times.
They are called: QUAKE RED ALERT.
They do mathematicacal calculations if there is an earthquake, on one side of the planet, it bounces
on the opposite sodes, it is all connected. They say that soon when the Weather is given on TV, the earthquake
possibilities , should be said. Of course the traditional weathermen, do not agree with them. But Quake Red Alert results are right on the dot, all the time.

6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes south coast of Papua, Indonesia

October 12, 2012 – INDONESIA - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck eastern Indonesia near the Aru Islands. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake was originally measured at 6.9. It struck at a depth of 33 kilometers, 80 kilometers north-northwest of Dobo on the Aru Islands. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive widespread tsunami was not likely to be generated by the earthquake. However, it said there was a small possibility of a local tsunami. People in the northern Australian city of Darwin reported feeling the tremors. Today’s earthquake is the fifth 6.0+ magnitude earthquake recorded in the month of October. –Radio Australia

There was a 4.5 quake in Maine yesterday afternoon/evening, supposedly felt all the way into NH. (no link, heard this from someone else and haven't looked into it yet) I have never heard of a quake a Maine, which makes it somewhat interesting.

Here ya go.

Earthquake in Maine rattles New England states
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The earthquake that rattled southern Maine was felt in New England states as far away as Connecticut, but caused no apparent damage or injuries.

Patrons of a pizza parlor near the epicenter of Tuesday's quake didn't know what was going on when the building started shaking, but it was enough to send all 20 of them hustling outside.

"It was loudest bang you ever heard in your life. We actually thought it was an explosion of some type," said Jessica Hill, owner of Waterboro House of Pizza. "The back door and door to the basement blew open," she said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.0 magnitude quake hit around 7:12 p.m. and its epicenter, about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, was about 3 miles deep. That location is about 20 miles west of Portland. The quake was first estimated to be 4.6 magnitude but was later downgraded.

Earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter Scale hits parts of Highlands
Parts of the Scottish Highlands have been hit by the largest earthquake in 35 years.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said a 2.8 magnitude quake hit Wester Ross on Wednesday evening - the biggest since June 11, 1978, when the area was on the receiving end of a tremble registering 3.4 on the Richter Scale.

One of the worst affected areas was in Poolewe where the Pool House Hotel guests fled down the stairs in a panic and china was broken after parts of the ceiling fell down.

Elizabeth Miles, 52, who works at the hotel said: "Some of the more astute guests realised immediately what it was and came hurtling down the stairs and they really weren't happy at all.

"We had another earthquake in March and it sounded like a large HGV was going past, but on this occasion it was a much different and louder noise so that's why it was a bit more disconcerting and made some of the guests nervous.

"However, most of the guests didn't have a clue what it was and were very confused.

"Some of them were like 'is there a railway next to hotel or something?'

"Wednesday's earthquake was a lot louder than ever before and our cloakroom has received a bit of damage too.

"A three-and-a-half foot piece of cornice around the ceiling fell down on top of some china below and we'll be looking to get that repaired as soon as possible."

After calling friends, Ms Miles soon realised the earthquake that had been felt around the whole of the Gairloch area.

She said: "I've spoken to various people around the region and it seems a lot felt it this time.

"I think once you get to about three on the Richter Scale you start seeing damage and obviously we weren't too far off that number this time.

"It's the worst one I've ever experienced in the last 20-odd years. It really was a horrible scraping, grinding noise.

"Twenty seconds doesn't sound long but it is if you have a strange, loud sound reverberating.”

A BGS seismologist Davie Galloway confirmed they had received nearly 100 reports of an earthquake at 6.43pm on Wednesday.

He said: "We received around 90 reports all coming from the Gairloch and Poolewe area.

"We record around 200 earthquakes in the UK every year and that area of north-west Scotland is one of the most active."
