Much of what lies in this thread I have either seen or witnessed first hand. Back in the late fifties people around us, us included were so poor that our mother used to get the neighbours to save their spare newspapets from my paper round which.she did on many occasions use to cook our food in a bucket in the back garden so we had something warm inside us. My pocket money went to buy seeds to plant in our large back garden which sure enough the neighbours lids would be sent to steal when we were on the way to school and theirs were hiding at home ready to pounce and then turn up lateer.
I also think that we have yet to see real shortages which have already started in that its a three to four working days for delivery on many items like it used to be.
I have seen the sheer poverty in Northern Ireland where the kids would be running around in summer bare foot while we were on patrol not that much different to Vietnam. In east Berlin was a sorry sight indeed that the 200 western marks you were allowed to take through Charlie could have you treat like royalty to get at the higjer value currency, the place was so run down that nothing was wasted.
Will it or could it get that low again, well look to the slavery societies today that are being ground into the ground in order of giving us what we need to survive without the skills on their losses.
This road has all but reached saturation, the debt monster has done the job it set out to do and all but removed those skills thus removed any chance at borrowing any money to get even the cheapest of goods, thus why the debt monster has left the building where new fodder is able to give any more of their worth away.
Goodness yes its going to get deeper in the next five years which.the government live on radio has already confirmed. I habe freinds on the money world who have also confirmed the same, one saying that its basically fucked and the easy money has gone.he is waiting for deflation to hit which always follows inflation, it has to because the entire monetary system is choked and needs to be renewed before the new monster is released, every avenue of self preservation has to be blocked totally before the new age can move forward unhindered, its happening on a larger scale by.the hour.
This is why skills are the only way other than stealing your way through life is going to get what you need, stealing is far more dangerous and eventually comes crashing down on those who do it, the people will police themselves eventually once as a cieling in that region is reached, I have seen it.

This thread does raise an interesting point.
Are people more dis-incentivised (sp?) to work in 2012 than say 1982?
Absolutely because the purchasing power of the average joe is pointless now because the average joe is becoming surplus to requirements. They drive for ever more efficiency of profit, low skilled jobs just aint needed now.
Ofc 'I' will find myself far far better off working than on the dole, but then again I don't earn 30k ffs lol.
Nor for that matter am I 'unskilled labor'....but there are plenty of people who ARE in that bracket which is why that report is so sensitive.
Real question is, when the whole system collapses, which it will in my opinion, and there is no dole money for anyone, and business's are gone, so the ordinary low calibre businessman has no money either..................will you be able to survive. I will because I have done the necessary of knowing and using the skills to feed my self ect, so as not to need outside assistance. If you have not, then you are going to feel the pain. You are feeling some of it now, as you are ranting and raving about taxes, cuts, ect, ect. But this is only a amall taste of what lies ahead of you. Unless you get into gear, you are all aboard the ship thats going down, and she is going down faster than the titanic, and the anchor hasn't hit the bottom yet, let alone the ship.
griswald,
I've managed to significantly reduce my dependence on others but not to eliminate it.
Such a thing isn't poss unless you own a farm and have invested tens of thousands in it in the way of power production etc.
Even then, total independence is a tall order...
I think its more about what level of lifestyle you want, as to whether its possible or not. If you are high maintainence, then iit will be a lot trickier than if you have simple needs. For most its going to be about the basic things to keep kith and kin together, as opposed to the necessity of tv or internet or mobile phone. And in my opinion when you believe that such a thing isn,t possible, then you are already building the walls you wont be able to get over.
I know people who have done it.
