Hello dg,

Legal implications aside, I can see the argument from both sides here.

I know ivy, depending on the type, can be very destructive to facades and brickwork if left unchecked. I can also appreciate that it looks really very pretty and I personally quite like it.

Far as boundary issues go, although he has the right to remove whatever is over his side, I think you may also have some legal responsibility re damage and issues to his property caused by anything growing from your own. For example, a tree blocking light or disturbing his foundations would be your own responsibility.

I used to work in housing and had to deal with many similar neighbour disputes and more often than not, it was about crowns blocking views and light from neighbouring properties. Invariably, it was the neighbour who had the responsibility to keep whatever was growing from their land in check, and I think this is generally a sound principle, in theory.

So, get out there with your shirt off, whilst the weather is fine and trim it back. You lazy bastard. If anything, it'll probably save you some aggro and earache down the line.

I was going to post my best guess based upon limited, local knowledge, but Abs said it all - 'cept I wasn't gonna say the very last part.

Anyway, the tree limb hanging over the house thing is what lead me to learn how to use a chainsaw.

The fellas were trimming one day, and when I brought them cold drinks, they jokingly asked if I would like to trim. I told them no, I didn't know how to use a chainsaw and I was afraid them.

They decided to teach me a 'trick'.

They taught me how to cut up a tree limb that was already cut off the tree and on the ground.

Ha! Ha! They joked to one another as I was quite girly and stiff and uncomfortable in my approach. I was afraid of the loud and dangerous machine that only men used.

But then I quickly acclimated to it.

I fear they regretted their joke afterward, as I've loved using a chainsaw since.

Point is, ultimately, it is your responsibility. I wish I could say otherwise.
