Hello all,

Just got in from the pub and wanted to share something with you all and get your reactions, if any. I was lucky enough to meet two people who have moved here from Poland. They each had never met before and came from seperate parts of Poland.

Firstly, I met a young man who was kind enough to talk to me about what he was doing over here. He explained that he initially came here to avoid conscription. He explained that his options at the time appeared to him to be very limited, as this is something that all young people had to do. The only real way to avoid military service was to travel to another country for a spell until he passed the age of conscription, and the UK seemed to fit the bill. Whilst here, he has been working hard and earning at least double what he could at home doing similar work.

I found this particularly interesting, as it's an aspect of the EU and motivation for people to come to this country that I had never before considered. What do you all make of it?

Secondly, I met a young woman in her twenties. She confirmed that as far as she knew, conscription was not compulsory for females in Poland. She initially came here to seek work after finding it difficult to find any in her own country. She confirmed that like for like, she could earn at least double over here doing something menial, than she could in her own country, even with qualifications. She had actually been here a few years before meeting her British husband, marrying and having a child here.

We discussed in particular the fact that military conscription in their own country was certainly something that was never really covered by our own msm, and certainly not something that your average UK born person would even consider a factor in possible reasons for coming to this country.

Just thought I'd share, as it's an aspect of immigration I'd never had the opportunity to discuss with non-UK born persons before.

Great post Ab. I will have to check it out for meself now.

However I think that it is sort of ironic that they will be using alot of immigrants NOW and in the near future to police England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland. I say this cos I know that people are coming from abroad especially to do those jobs.
It would also explain why Joanna Lumley was used to create mass publicity in order to convince the sheeple that we need to let the ultra violent ghurkas into this country.

What if you asked him if he was to chicken to serve in his home countries military, and coming to your country makes him look money hungry and self serving. :P asking him in a friendly way

Have to say, Rick, I'd probably do the same if the roles were reversed.

Theres also cost to bear in mind.
Living in the UK is probably twice as expensive as Poland...unless ofc you cheat a little :)

All this concentration on work is lowering the fertility rates btw as mentioned in a separate thread :D

They come to do many jobs at low pay which many Brits simply won't do.
Not that I blame Brits for not wanting to work for minimum pay..

Not like you to stereotype people steevo, I'm surprised.
The ghurkas were made some promises which the govt didn't come through on, just as the govt completely destroyed the home of the chagos islanders and totally disregarded their right to british passports and abode.

Anyway Andyh, as you are aware I'm sure, there are Gurka soldiers NOW in the British Army WITHOUT zimmer frames. They will be able to continue working in a military capacity (including police) in THIS country.

Absolutely yes.
Its about what a certain group had been promised in the past is all.
The british govt do not have to recruit these people for example, which would have avoided all the hassle in the first place.

I don't see solutions ever coming from authority nor do I ever see them coming from a corrupt financial system.
Hence I am anti-state and anti-authority.

The 'notanazis' on DIF for example see the solution coming from a 'perfect benevolent dictator' lol....

In the place I used to live my building was a real mix of peoples - there was the nigerian mother and daughter in flat 1 who had come to britain for their own safety in the late 80's and both worked as nurses - flat 1b which housed a young guy who had just come out of care flat 2 was an argentinian girl who had come here to study and her british boyfriend also a student - flat 3a had 3 generations of romanians living in it and was a quarter of the size of my place - the grandparents looked after the kids whilst the parents worked - flat 3b contained about 12 polish people who slept there in shifts - flat 4 was a young gay couple one of whom was american and studying here and the other a psychiatric nurse - flat 5 was me and flat 6 was an older british gentleman who worked as a white van man.

Flats 1 - 4 and 6 were studio flats the only flat which had its own bathroom was mine. The owners of the building had decided to rent out to people who would not normally be housed by the council but who were on benefits or low income - they also kept the rents low and affordable - they were awesome landlords tbh.

I had long conversations with many of the immigrants living there - most just wanted to either get a good education or earn a decent amount of money before returning home. I can't recall any mentioning conscription but given their ages I would imagine that may have been a reason as well.

It really opened my eyes tbh about the difference in attitude held by a lot of immigrants - they are much more reliant on themselves rather then their government. It also has influenced hugely my opinion on immigrants and immigration - I felt safer surrounded by the people in those flats then I did whilst living on a majoratively british council estate where daily I was subject to abuse, where violence against people and property was the 'done thing' and people had no ability to look after themselves responsibly.

The above has been my experience and not necessarily reflective of everyones experiences with either council estates or immigrants.

On the subject of conscription - I don't blame anyone who wants to avoid it.

I enquired about Greek residency, I can either live here for 10 years or do 6 months in the army. Guess which I'm doing?

Back in the late 80's I used deal with quite a few people from the Turkish community in and around north and south London and a number of them were here to avoid military service.

I am a little aware of this. Same goes for australia, (and probably other countries too like USA) ...some europeans came here in part to avoid military service when they were young. What we see after though is high rates of return migration in some groups as they head back years down the track.

Example:
statistics show the beginning of a trend of reverse migration of Greeks from the United States and Australia.

I worked with a Dutch guy in the 80's who had come to the UK to study in order to avoid National Service. His plan was also to work here until no longer eligible for call up.

I recall he was invited to some 'do' on a Dutch Naval vessel, (apparently a common thing where local ex-pats are invited for a dinner at whichever port the ships are in), I cautioned him that although nothing would probably happen, the moment he was on board he was on Dutch sovereign 'soil' and might not be let back off.
He properly got in a flap. :)

His Mrs was having none of it though and he was dragged off to the event. :chuckle:
He's lived and worked here ever since.

We also had an Algerian bookkeeper who was studying for his Business masters at Edinburgh Uni when he became eligible for call-up there.
They were less relaxed. Basically "get back here or we'll extradite your arse!"
As it turned out, he spent his time, after boot camp, polishing his bum in an office because of his qualifications.
He then zoomed his carcass back here asap, got married and eventually set up a Michelin starred guest house/restaurant.

So yeah, a fairly common but rarely mentioned reason for migrating.

When you see all the pics on tv of all the asylum seekers coming to Xmas Island ( trying to bypass asian countries) , to get to aussie land, it does seem that 99% of them are all young guys of military/fighting age. From a young 13 up to about 30ish years of age.
Ya never see all the poor old men and ladies, young ladies, kids, etc,
It always seems to be heaps of young "fighting age" guys. I hope they don't want to fight over here... why did they leave all their mums, dads, grannies and granpa's behind.. and the young toddlers, etc.
It must be cos they don't wanna do the military killings and all that horrible stuff.
cos, the boats are always full of young strong men. ( no poor old weak folk who would really need asylum)

This has puzzled me for ages. .. so thanks for thread, dear abs.

I really got this from the two I met, thoreau. I've never taken the time to really chat to people before, but I'm very glad I did.

The young chap was actually a bit out of place, so the group I was with invited him to join us for a bit. He definitely wasn't feeling sorry for himself and seemed to actually really be relishing the challenge of being in a new country on his own. When he started to talk about military service it was like a massive coin dropping for me, as it's not even something I'd considered before.

I came away really admiring the pair of them for having the cahoonies to do it in the first place. I'm not sure I could, though I think I'm getting awful close to just fekking off...anywhere. I'm really starting to feel like there is absolutely nothing here for me now. Not to say it'd be any better anywhere else in the world, cos I'm quite sure it wouldn't. I appreciate we are very privileged in some ways in the UK but I can also appreciate that we're quite disadvantaged in some respects.

No point sitting moaning about it though, get off your arse and change it. I'm sure nobody will ever do it for me.

I believe someone very clever once said "familiarity breeds contempt". Certainly has in my case.

Well the laws that seemingly 'support' all these EU immigrants work both ways.
People in the UK can if they wish move elsewhere in the EU.
Its not for everyone I suppose, it boils down to your own individual situation. It might be that somewhere else in the EU is better or perhaps just somewhere else in the UK or perhaps you are just better off where you are now.

There is the question to consider what 'better off' actually means.
That in itself is quite involved :)
