Because they are trying to communicate with you on some level. Numerous persons, in altered states of consciousness by way of entheogens and so on have apparently had lengthy psychic conversations with animals, plant-life and even inanimate objects. Household pets especially appear to have personalities that are quite like that of a human albeit with anxieties relative to them. Psychologists often will make out that your belief that they wish to speak with you is the result of behavioural tics ( pardon the pun) picked up during childhood, learning to interact with other humans. Anyone who has ever looked into the eyes of a pet though...knows the score.
