Couch...although the word itself, if one says it out loud enough times, starts to annoy :D

I think my parents used to say settee but they were not posh by any means. I say sofa I think. I have heard couch used by people other than English people so it is not just you irre­press­ible.

What about comfy chair?

Yep, that was them. They were born around the turn of the century and came from Indiana.

Settee is a new word to me,the name sofa is used mostly and in conjunction to describe a sofa bed not a normal couch, almost all the people around here use the word couch in describing it.

I've not heard of Chesterfield, but for a cigarette brand I don't is made anymore.

There are many opinions on the origin of the word ‘chesterfield’ as a description of the item we now know as a leather chesterfield sofa.
Many believe chesterfield to be an adopted turn of phrase, stemming back to the turn of the century when chesterfield started to become the word used to describe a sofa in Canada and certain parts of America.
In England, a davenport with arms and back of the same height in buttoned leather may also be referred to as a chesterfield sofa. Another view is that the fourth earl of Chesterfield - Phillip Stanhope (1694-1773) was honoured by the commissioning of a piece of fine furniture (a leather chesterfield sofa).
Many believe the term chesterfield originally referred to the style of buttoning of the leather, shape of the sofa back, and even the height of the seat.

When my dog gets stressed out with thunderstorms or fireworks he takes off and lies in the bath. :dunno:
