I have been watching this Out of the Wild: Venezuela series by Discovery on NetFlix.

It's a good look in to going way Off The Grid.

I never ask when and whence, I just ask if you ever lived off the Grid?

Has anyone else here lived off the Grid?

Off the Grid is under the Law of “Survival Of The Fittest” i assume.

Depends what you call off grid.
I've managed in my younger days for a few weeks in the middle of nowhere, yes.
Entrangermerc prolly has too.

Why?

Off grid might just be in a community who are all off the grid.

Ayn rand seems to have permeated western culture so much that people think it is "natural" somehow.

It isn't.

No-one would be able to live off the grid for very long because you can't survive in this society without money. If you watch this documentary:

watchdocumentary.org/watch/louis-theroux...video_d64b9abd5.html

Which is about some hardcore survivalists in the States, they're pretty serious and resourceful people, but even they have to buy things. I find it very difficult to believe that anyone could survive for very long without buying anything, or without using things that they've bought previously. This is why the number one priority for all humanity should be to hold the existing financial and economic system to account, and steadily work towards a fairer, less fascistic system. Ideally, you could phase out money completely, but this is decades, if not centuries, from being realised.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

I agree. Furthermore I think that much of the "survivalist" brigade are being marketed to and fleeced.

Alex jones is pitching the doomsday and the firearms-survivalist manufacturers and retailers are hitting the sales out of the prak yearly.

In the meantime, families waste their money on iron ration, munitions, shelters and other doomsday claptrap.

I used to care but now I think that it is best to leave them to their toys.

I don't like their glee when they talk of the SHTF.

It is elitist, cruel and sadistic. Misanthropi and smug to boot.

Fortunately it is totally misguided.

True, even the amish take part in the system to some extent.
The only people who are truly self reliant are the sort we never see, native indians in small patches of ridiculously remote jungle etc.

The only thing I hunted was rabbit and fish.
Quite a few berries, dandelion.
Sometimes some eggs I remember..

I certainly wouldn't count it as real 'wild' or off-grid etc and I was a lot younger and tougher then. No way I'd manage it now.

There are many diffetent types of off grid that people contend with today, urbanites in boxes under bridges to folks sleeping in barns and hedge backs. In the dales here it would be ridiculously easy to simply walk out and thete is food in every field and road side verge at all times of year, same goes for any well stocked valley.

The rivers are full of fish, night lines are childs play to be honest, getting caught is highly likely unless you know the area well or regulary move on and take only what you need. In towns and villages there are many well tended vedge gardens with something in all year round, take my own allotment for instance, there are bee hives and fields on the outskirts of towns with some kind of food available, dairies galore full of milk, if you asked the farmer directly he would probably give you some if you asked nicely.

Hunting today would not be needed because there are much easier pickings if your brazen enough to walk in and take it, keep those supplies above w 1500 calories, stay dry and warm and you could easily last an average winter here in the Uk, save injury or diseases.

I would say yes we do still live under the law of 'survival of the fittest' in that those best able to adapt to their surroundings and change survive better then those who don't.
Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.
