Trago Mills a discount department store chain has been fined £200,000 for illegally dumping waste at two of its sites in Devon and Cornwall. The case was brought against them after the environment agency discovered waste on the sites in 2009.
Waste, including asbestos was discovered tipped and 'disposed' of at Trago Mills sites near Newton Abbot and Liskeard magistrates at Torquay Courts.
Trago Mills Ltd. (South Devon) and Charles Robertson Ltd. (Developers) have admitted five offenses.
They were fined a total of £185,000 for the five breaches of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, They were then ordered to pay £14,558 in costs and a £30 victim surcharge bringing the total of the fine to £199,588.
The agency said the amount of dumped waste was believed to be in the "several thousand tonnes".
There are reports the company has co-operated with the Environment Agency to remove the waste via official protocol.
