Not really enlightenment and not an angel, but, on the day before Thanksgiving, I ran into a supermarket for some bread, knowing how busy it would be with last minute turkey shoppers. I got the bread and spotted my favorite checkout lady in the Less Than 10 Items Speedy Checkout line.
I got in line, and as usual, saw this lady reach under her counters for coupons or discounts for the people ahead of me. She does this so quickly and efficiently that her line always moves faster than anyone elses.
As she was ringing me up, I told her how pretty her crystal bracelet was. Now, mind you, there were about 7 people waiting behind me, and yet she took the time to grab both of my hands and she said something like "I want to especially wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, You are very kind and your words stay with me during the day". I was dumbfounded, so I just said "Well you deserve it".
As I was walking to my car, I was wondering what have I ever said to her that would stay with her during the day? The only thing that I can think of is that I always tell her "Thank You" and that I hope she has a nice day. And then I thought of the people in front of me as I was waiting. The people who had received extra discounts and help from her, and I don't think they acknowledged her and what she had done.
So, if there is any enlightment at all from this, it is; sometimes the smallest things like a "thank you" can mean something to someone who goes through most of their day not hearing it.
A kind word can save lives.
Lovely post.
