You are correct in the OP. In a sense there is not much change that can be made by a vote but there are good men and women trying to put forward changes and also there are others attempting to take away rights. So once you vote you still need to participate and letter your representative or senator know how you feel.

A good recent example I can give is the bills that are being put forward to outlaw project labor agreements. The attacks on workers with the right to work ( for less) laws. These laws are driving down wages. In the states the fight against union workers went all the way up to the NFL players. If more people voted and were informed then perhaps we could stop this.

So these people who cannot vote in the US would all vote for the libertarian party if they could then?

I hope not. Gary Johnson is a fan of Ayn Rand who regards Milton Friedman as his favourite philosopher. They're also linked to people like the Cato institute.
The libertarians are all about capitalism on steroids. At least Obama wanted to do something about healthcare - the libertarians want the lucrative disease industry entirely in the hands of big business. Like they want everything else in the hands of private capital. They're kind of anarcho-capitalists. Live free or die by making money by all means necessary.

Then they have a 2 party state and democracy is a joke and I'm absolutely right to state that voting is not only a waste of time but a census by the back door.

I agree it's essentially a waste of time Andy. But, as I said, I also think understand voting for someone who might get in if their policies seem a bit less abhorrent.,
Like depending on how things pan out, there's a chance I may hold my nose and vote Labour at the next election. Do I think my one vote means shit? No. Do I regard the Labour party as anything other than a bunch of cunts? No. Do I think them getting in power would really change anything or mean anything? No. If they got in would they do lots of stuff that would irritate me enormously? Yes. Would I go round calling them a bunch of cunts? Yes. Would they be a tiny, tiny bit better than Satan incarnate David Cameron and little lord Beelzebub Clegg? Maybe.

Though this, of course, underlines another serious problem - the only reason to vote is one guy might be slightly less of a cunt than the other. But whoever you vote for, a cunt gets in.

Precisely why I don't do it anymore. I refuse to partake.

I have no problem whatsoever with that. I just think if you want to hold your nose and vote, then vote. If you don't, don't.

I think less so for something of import, but I definitely don't see the point of acting like that over sports, which many Brit's and Americans are well known for doing also.

It's strange the way we humans like whip ourselves up into a frenzy over hero figures. I don't get the sports thing either. Well I sort of see the attraction, but I couldn't get all excited about it. I'm invariably quite pleased when England gets knocked out of the world cup so people stop going on about it so much. I pray England never wins it again - we'd never hear the last of it.

Even with music. I clap and cheer and dance at concerts, but I'm not interested in going crazy or in meeting the band or idolising them or anything. I just want to enjoy the music.

What's worse is the way the winners of elections act. They're so happy and excited. If I'd just been elected prime minister I'd be thinking...Failing economy... unemploynent...food banks on the rise...foreign wars...corporate factions trying to push their agenda...SHIT! WHAT THE FUCK HAVE I GOT MYSELF INTO?!? - not grinning ear to ear and acting like I'd just won the X-Factor. It just shows the arrogance and unreality of it all - I'm in charge now! Woohoo! I'm the best! Go me! Go me!

Fair point. But I doubt the euphoric crowds consist solely of grateful Obamacare recipients.

I totally get people pleased the other asshole didn't get in, but it's the intensity of the celebration that does my head in. It's the impression of - that's it! The best that it could be has happened! This is a moment for joy! Obama will sort shit out!. My hero!

Indeed.

Patriotism and nationalism both play large parts in this type of hysteria but they're also two things I really don't like nor understand... or want to understand if I'm honest. I find it all rather wierd.

It's just basic tribalism and divide and conquer tactics. Even if people don't buy into it - which they are heavily socially incentivised to do; absolutely massive effort goes into this in the US public school system - then not many people are willing to stick their neck out and stand out from the crowd. And when they do, they will usually find that there are negative consequences for them. So it becomes self-perpetuating.

To give you an example, imagine in the middle of the Olympics this year (which I quite enjoyed, but don't really get sucked into the hysteria and faux-patriotism) just being in a pub somewhere and saying "I don't really care whether Britain win gold medals or not". You almost certainly would have got a negative reaction, and most people would have disagreed with your sentiments. But for all you know there could be someone in the pub who agrees with you, but they've just learned not to express that opinion. And that's just one incident, imagine that incident blown up 1,000 times over in a society where no-one challenges those sentiments. That's how you end up with hysteria.

I think in any civilised society you should get access to medicine period. And people are by no means 'trained not to see it' - it's a myth that if you let the 'free market' run totally rampant everyone somehow benefits by a get what you pay for healthcare system based on the myth that if you abolish taxation everyone will be wealthy.

As long as the current system exists, I think it should be mandatory for all MPs to use the NHS with no preferential treatment whatsoever. They should be on exactly the same waiting lists as everyone else and go to the same GP surgeries.

Really bad things are coming into play in the UK. Like payment by results. Do not get me fucking started on that one. But in a nutshell, service providers are going to be forced to put their targets before the wellbeing of their service users - or they don't get paid. It's predicated on an assumption people who use, say, mental health or drug services are exactly like tins of beans coming off an assembly line.

What would be better is if everyone had a decent enough a wage to pay for their own healthcare.

Correct. It is indeed a myth that if you let the free market run rampant that you would instantly create wealth.
This is because of the tabula rasa basis that anarcho capitalism works off- ie it assumes that everyone is starting the game with the same amount of money each and that they all work in their own self interests. In this way a monopoly can never arise because there would be no power structure to support it and anytime it is tried someone else would just undercut it.

However, we do not have a tabula rasa today, we have billionaires and they have immense power, to open up the market for them would only increase their wealth in untold ways.

Its also worth bearing in mind that you will never create wealth from a state that only milks the same wealth to pass on from its own taxpayers who are again not the upper class because they're not resident for tax and then theres the corporate personhood to deal with ofc ;)

People need to understand and plan for both sides of this situation and come to a rational conclusion and that is simply that you cannot ever expect a state power to do anything but support its corporate cronies or swallow them whole and still shit on the working class.

People have to understand that for a good working democracy it must be direct, it must be well informed and they must value their freedom above all else to avoid tyranny of the 2 party corporatist/fascist/anti-economic situation they face today.

People will go to the desert and kill arabs but they won't kill politicians and bankers. If they want their freedom then this is literally what they must do. Eventually once docile enough the americans will hand over their arms.

There will be no solution from the system because the system is not designed to support dissent, arms are considered defense against each other, not to protect the constitution against tyrannical govt via militia....this was the whole intent of the founding fathers of the USA. Via media programming it has become something else. Just a 'right' or a 'fad' or a 'hobby' or 'protection'.

Its far more than that, the Swiss understand this, this is why they have so little gun crime yet are armed to the teeth.
Its why they are well educated in comparison and why they have direct democracy and we do not.
They value their freedom, they are relatively wealthy and do not have an immigration problem despite allowing people to try and move there if they so wish.

There is also the 'reality' aspect to tune into here, where is the money going to come from for all this social welfare? Right now they are upping the debt ceiling again and prepping for QE-infinity, people are broke which is why they need the welfare but if all this method ends up in madness then why do it?

Its not just the US either where we see this socialism failing and like I said, I believe it is by design. The population as mentioned in WUB's german pensioners thread is falling, the elite think long term, on the one hand they talk of overpopulation yet on the other in provate bilderberg meetings they discuss how to deal with a dwindling tax revenue and an increasing amount of pensioners.

Make no mistake, that is real and it is happening, we are seeing this greying population start first in japan and eastern europe but we will soon see this in Russia...China if it continues its one child policy is facing an incredible nightmare scenario but I believe they are authoritarian enough to carry out a 'Great Cull' just as Russia did in the past. They have the balls to do it and their population will do little to resist.

We are a divided people, each separated amongst our own kind and our own issues and we keep thinking if only if we sort ourselves out etc.
This problem is truly global and it involves everyone on this Earth. The bankers are moving in for total global domination while our governments are asleep at the wheel because they only think in 5 - 10 year terms of job with massive pension payoffs. Its always someone elses problem in their case and they are happy to pass the buck.

I approve of many of Naders policies btw, some of which cost no money, but a lot of it is just pie in the sky.
I myself consider how long the guy would live (seriously) and how long it would take to enact, and just what they expect all these corporations to do in the meantime, Ofc they'll just all pack up and leave.
Long term this is actually a good thing, short term I doubt anyone could swallow it anymore than anyone can swallow the hardship they need to undergo to get rid of the parasites.

You register then you are handing over your sovereignty to someone else.

Worse still is that banks have access (at least in the UK) to your voting registration details. They advertise it themselves as; “not registering to vote may harm your credit score/records.” Why on earth is this even allowed? Well... in the UK apparently! Where the government is at the service of banks and credit agencies.

Yep its also a census by the back door imho by forcing people to register, just another way of keeping track of people.
