Who was it that said'

The issue which has swept down the centuries and which will have to be fought sooner or later is the people versus the banks.

It has already begun.

My law firm is acting for a number of business clients who have taken the brave step of suing their bankers. Although there has been much made of the bank’s so called mis-selling of personal protection insurance, which is better termed as simple deceit, there has been little publicity given to the plight of what are usually small businesses who have found to their surprise that they have bought all kinds of weird and incomprehensible financial products from their bankers, usually as a condition of a loan arrangement, only to discover to their cost that what they have bought was entirely inappropriate for them of their businesses.
For too many years small businesses have looked upon their bankers as part of the advice team with which they need to surround themselves. Bankers have made many useful recommendations and their customers expect them to deal fairly with them, balancing the needs of the bank with the needs of the business.

Negative thinking H.

Not if one makes their own bricks and plucks their own chikens.

Time to start, now, not tomorrow.

Seems like a nice enough bloke, the problem is that what he initially describes is actually a credit union, lol :)

A 'bank' as such is a completely different monster and tbh trying to open up yet another fractional reserve institution shouldn't be something he's after doing. Credit unions that share profits out amongst account owners are reasonably 'ethical' so to speak but it needs to be full reserve and as such account holders should also be willing to share out losses. Needless to say not a lot of people would fancy that idea at all, as no-one seems to like responsibility and accountability these days.

The legal definition of a 'bank' in the UK is an institution that can legally carry out fraud.
I certainly would not want to run a 'bank'.

Well he (kind of) did it...against all the odds.

www.burnleysavingsandloans.co.uk/about-us/
Burnley Savings and Loans Ltd officially opened its doors in September 2011. The company was created and is managed by David Fishwick, a local entrepreneur, business man, and the largest supplier of Minibuses in the U.K.

After the recession began in late 2008 to early 2009, David found that many of his customers, through no fault of their own, were struggling to obtain loans from their High Street Banks. These were loyal customers that he had done business with for many years, and whom he had complete faith in.

David decided that if the Banks weren’t willing to help ordinary people, then he would.

Under the slogan “Bank on Dave!” and using the correct legal channels, David obtained the necessary documentation required to issue loans. These loans range from small personal loans to finance for businesses.

Feeling that High Street Banks treat people as credit scores and not as individuals, David decided to return to basics. As such, Burnley Savings and Loans Ltd DO NOT credit score, choosing a more personal approach to underwriting, dealing with customers on a case by case basis.

Once everything was in place to enable Burnley Savings and Loans Ltd to provide loans, David turned his attention towards savings.

The first thing he noticed was just how little people were being offered on their savings. He decided that Burnley Savings and Loans Ltd should offer a highly competitive rate of interest, making customer’s savings work harder for them.

And so, with the assistance of a great team of lawyers in Manchester, Burnley Savings and Loans Ltd began searching for a way to offer 5% AER. This was eventually found in the form of a certificate for lenders and borrowers.

Whilst we can help you achieve 5% AER on your savings, we also offer the opportunity for people to be a part of something that could not only benefit Burnley and the North West of England but EVERY community in the country! This is because the money you provide is used to provide business and personal loans.

So by offering affordable loans to people who have struggled to obtain finance from the high street banks, through no fault of their own, as well as offering 5% AER on your savings David has proved that the financial industry can also be socially responsible.

Any profits received, after the overheads are paid WILL BE DONATED TO CHARITY! At Burnley Savings

Looks like a step in the right direction to me... ;)

Apart from the profits to charity bit.
Its best returned as a divvy to the customers or invested in community schemes/grants perhaps voted on by the customers.
I would keep the peoples money with the people.
