Are they the big deal in the UK like WalMart is in the USA,

They are becoming increasingly so, Rick, mainly because all the other shops are fekking closing down left, right and centre and people are a bit stumped for choice, imo.

Where once there were many independent traders for example, I now have within walking distance two Tescos, two Asdas and a Sainsburys.

ASDA ain't too fuckin' hot to trot, you can't even get any fucking provolone cheese there!! Sliced, grated OR block!! NONE. What the FUCK is that about?? Y'all are a Hell of a lot closer (UK) to Italy than I was when I still lived in Texas and I had NO problem getting grated/sliced provolone to throw on my pizzas. Right next to the fuckin mozzarella on the dairy/cheese aisle. What the goddamn blubbering FUCK, ASDA?!?!?! :mad:

Asda are aimed at a similar market to Wal-Mart, but they don't yet have the same kind of power or prominence. Tesco would be our equivalent of Wal-Mart.

You probably need to go to a fairly large Sainsbury's to get Provolone.. Or Waitrose probably. Or Marks and Spencer..

Booths usually stock things you can't find elsewhere.

I like the market best for shopping, yet rarely go because it's so awkward to get parked nearby & transport stuff. It's actually quite expensive, but their cheeses & meats & veg are all good & fresh.

Honestly, I'm not really that big of a fan of cheese (of any kind) but just find it hard to believe that so many things I "took for granted" back home are nearly impossible to track down locally over here. For instance, Ziploc brand heavy-duty freezer bags. Can't find them anywhere in local stores. (Not even a British equivalent) And I like to marinate chicken, often! But you need a good, tight-locking zip-lock bag in order to do it successfully. The plastic zip-lock bags you find in grocery stores over here are USELESS!! They don't hold the liquid in, even when sitting upright in a deep bowl, they STILL leak!! :(

Oh well, thank God for online shopping, I guess....

We have one small grocery store other than Walmart, and Walmart is cheaper, plus it's the biggest employer here.
