I have just acquired a soldering iron. What can you do with one besides the obvious?

My first task is to fix a door handle with it but I'm hungry for more and can't think what else I can use it for.

Stained glass making. Google it abs and I would be interested in commissioning a subvertive rude and homoerotic one. Which you may possibly swapp for a rude, homoerotic and subverted needle work/embriodery/fabric toy?

Sorry, have to tell you this but off topic... Bric a Brac, collectibles shop in Gloucester. I nearly wet my pants it's so aewsome. I cannot buy anything else at present, unless I can shift stuff. I may have some furnature to swap give away etc. Saw Wolf's idea antique leater topped clerks writing desk - $145:00. One day it will be yours.

Make subersive stained class Abs!

Thanks Lesley! What a grand idea...I hadn't even considered making it 'subversive' to begin with, but lets be honest, it probably would be anyway if it came from my twisted noggin.

I'm researching right now.

Do a internet search on how to repair small appliances and practice repairing and soldering wires that broke, or buy a cheap easy first electrical kit and see if you like building kits also do a search on the types of kits available, you may have found a good hobby.

Way back there was a place called heath kit, I was told that sold put together electronics

No...obviously not. It's a door handle on a cupboard which snapped and that I'm going to attempt to solder back together. If it doesn't work I'll have to replace all the handles and fuck that up the arse.

I still keep reading the thread title as "Soldiering Skills" - imagining abs in his camo gear and massive weapon - about to ambush the enemy from behind. :chuckle:

Nah...tried that. Just to be clear, it's a very thin piece of metal which formed a decorative handle on a cupboard door. Is it really that bonkers of an idea?

How to make and solder a metal cone.

2012 03 24114739 Zpsc8947fcb

First make a paper pattern to neatly circle you desired shape.

2012 03 24114757 Zps380a10aa

Cut out then anneal them to a cherry red colour and let them cool down naturally for a few minuites.

2012 03 24115234 Zpse32b06d4

Take your desired shape, here is mine for making the cone, it is a piece of scrap timber, but it could be anything solid enough to support the next part of the process.

2012 03 24115244 Zps0eb5cc3a

2012 03 24115342 Zpsc09b2987

Now carefully fold the metal blank around the pattern, until the two open seams line up, I use a wooden cyclinder to aid forming the part without damaging the flat surfaces of the metal.

2012 03 24120640 Zpsf68b9525

Carry on forming until you reach this stage, then run a piece of sand paper along the seam/gap to clean up the edges, this will help gain a good connection when soldering.

2012 03 24121713 Zpsa28c57ae

When your happy with the neatness nof the seam edges, apply the flux along the seam from the inside, not the outside.

2012 03 24122257 Zps266844be

Now the metal needs to be wired to prevent the metal from moving/expanding during the soldering process. Start from the widest end and twist the two ends of some plain wire together so it leaves a long tail to one side, slide the wire up as tight as possible and loope the tail over the top edge so it does;nt slide back down again, do this several times as shown, so the ends of the twists are to one side of the seam, try and get the seam gap closed as tight as possible, the smaller the gap the faster it will take the solder.

2012 03 24123202 Zpsc37b2c72

Now solder the piece using a gas torch/blowlamp, as the metal becomes hot enough cherry reddish add the solder to the seam area and if it is warm enough the solder will automatically flow along the seam.

2012 03 24130023 Zps162c473b

2012 03 24151750 Zps200b9f70

Now remove the wires, replace the metal onto its former/mandrel and clean everything up, mine was for a garden dibber, metal was 0.70 mm copper sheet, solder was 660 MP silver solder.
