Press regulation deal struck by parties

A deal has been struck between the three main political parties on a new press regulation regime in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.

An independent regulator will be set up by royal charter with powers to impose million pound fines on UK publishers and demand upfront apologies from them.

Party leaders told MPs the charter would preserve press freedom and protect victims of press intrusion.
Whenever I see the term 'cross-party consensus', I instantly become suspicious.

If you listen to the video, at about 7:15 the interviewee states that this will use "the exact same structure as the BBC". Virtually everyone that's looked at this issue with any sort of independence agrees that the BBC edits itself all the time.

Looks like they will amend the charter in the future to stop free speech,it's a work in progress no doubt. :(
