Maggots definitely need flies to lay them (eggs). Interesting point though, what would happen to a body in a sealed airtight room. Presumably it would decay but at a slower rate.

I once saw a pic of a grave dug up in London. Apparently, the occupant had been buried in the 1600s but was near perfectly preserved. She had skin and her clothing was still in pretty good shape. The ground she had been placed in was mostly clay, I think, which was the reason she was so well preserved.

Also, peat-bog burials can remain remarkably well preserved for thousands of years.

'Tollund Man' above.

It's an interesting thought, Dawnie, but I think it's fairly conclusive how and why the flies are attracted to that particular scent. Most things that are living inside us require us to be living for their own sake and will quickly expire once we do. That particular smell, as Oi pointed out, is like orgasm for a fly. It can probably detect it from very far away and will go to great lengths to get at the source.

Take a quick look around your home and I'll bet you'll find lots of little nooks and crannies whereby a fly could gain ingress to lay it's eggs on your rotting flesh. Another important aspect of the process of decomposition is that there is already bacteria all around you which starts everything off, which initiates the 'smell', which attracts all sorts of other wee, tim'rous beasties to the party.

Ah well...that's my sunshine spread for today. Now, fuck the lot of yous. :coffee:

As the cells die, bacteria within the body begin breaking them down. Enzymes in the pancreas cause the organ to digest itself. The body soon takes on a gruesome appearance and smell. Decomposing tissue emits a green substance, as well as gasses such as methane and hydrogen sulfide. The lungs expel fluid through the mouth and nose. Flies and maggots that have been living inside the host suddenly see the light of day.

I think this is referring to eggs that have been laid on the dead flesh (sometimes within wounds and so on) which are then exposed as the flesh decomposes.

Though, I am frequently wrong.

Before I moved out of my parents', I shared a bedroom with my little sister, & it was an old house with fireplaces in the bedrooms. One night I heard what sounded like a bird trapped in our chimney, flapping & flapping, & I told my dad, but he did nothing about it. Then one night soon after, when I went in there, you couldn't see from one side of this large room to the other, because the air was thick with bluebottles. It was like something out of a gothic horror, especially because my sister was lying in there asleep.

We reckoned the bird must have got infested with maggots that had all hatched at one go, after she'd gone to sleep. :O

Nasty, nasty, nasty!

Thinking about nature, it's funny you don't get spiders busily spinning their webs close to corpses, to catch the flies as the maggots morph. Or maybe they do, and it goes unnoticed.

So when a fly dies do people come out of it?

Only if you are Goldblum (Earth Girls Are Easy)...The Fly - this scene features Dr. Seth Brundle overseeing a baboon splicing gone awry and then he falls on a roof and pulls/chews some weird claw thing from his abdomen!

Seth begins to exhibit what at first appear to be beneficial effects of the process—such as increased strength, stamina and sexual potency. He believes this to be a result of the teleporting process "purifying" his body as it was being rebuilt. However, he soon becomes violent, and eventually realizes that something went horribly wrong when his fingernails begin falling off...Blume means flower in German. In English, the name Blum...

The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you.. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!

Not me personally. I think my dad did after the bluebottle event. The noises I'd heard sounded quite high up inside it.
