I've been thinking a lot about this recently, actually. In the past, my sexuality has never really been an issue for anyone, especially me. Although I may wear the big, gay, clown mask around here for a laugh, it's actually not that big a deal in the real world and certainly isn't all there is to me.

My most recent job however sees me going from an office-environment to working mainly with one other bloke outdoors much of the time. There is some banter with a few others, but it usually involves them talking about "queers" or "pakis" and me just standing there looking awkward. I have thought about saying something as I would ordinarily, but given I'm only working with this other chap most of the time, I'm not really sure how to approach it.

I'm not so bothered about the gay thing as it's really nobody elses business but mine, and if other's haven't the decency to at least consider that someone in their company might in fact be 'a gay', that's just poor breeding, imo. The race thing is starting to grate a little though.

My silence has been noted though and it doesn't happen nearly as often now. I know it's not much, but it's the best I could muster in the circumstances.

...following on from that, I DO NOT tolerate any such behaviour from friends and family, whatsoever. I've made it clear and in no uncertain terms that this kind of talk will not be entertained by me and that it purely shows ignorance.

I've lost some friends and don't speak very often to some family because of it, but I'm comfortable with that. It is not something I wish to have included in my 'experience' of life, and although I have no control over strangers and people at work presently, I will not expose myself to such ignorance in my free time simply because of how long I have known someone or because we are related by blood or marriage.
