My sister almost joined the police as a newly graduated young woman. Fucking glad she didn't and went into teaching as she had always wanted. She is kind, patient, generous and funny not to mention smart. So a kind, generous person can join the plod. The question is whether they remain that way. I'm guessing that their is a fair amount of brain-washing that goes on.

My mum and dads neighbour is a copper and is specialised in using police dogs. He demonstrates enormous affection for his dogs (he has six) and is helpful and protective to my mum and dad and I appreciate that. He can't wait to retire and has a low opinion of the public, probably as a consequence of the job.

I would think twice before inviting a member of the police into my private life, but I would not abandon or exclude somebody I knew because they were or had become a member of the police.

Someone I used to work with who I used to really fancy left to join the police. I bumped into her a few times once she was in the police, and I assure you I didn't fancy her any less.

I thankfully don't live in my hometown any more, but I googled her name one day and the first link that came up was a story from the local press that she'd been badly assaulted on a call out. Not in itself that surprising in my hometown.
