Just read this over on another forum. It was part of a thread started giving a heads up about the coming bad/snow weather.
We had a thunderstorm with hailstones earlier today here in Warrington. I happened to be on the phone to my friend in Crewe and it broke out with her at exactly the same time! Her thunderclaps were exactly the same time as mine! :O

I digress....here is what was on the other forum....
Many peoples homes on the Somerset Levels are still flooded and I heard from a from a friend who lives there that they haven't been able to flush their toilet for three weeks and have to wait for a daily truck to arrive to take sewage away. This is getting old fast for us but as for those people it must be truly depressing. A state of Emergency has been declared in the area and the local authorities are considering calling on the military for assistance, The RN most likely.
www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread994706/pg#pid17467960

Now why isn't this state of emergency with the local authority considering calling for military assistance on MSM? They normally jump all over this sort of thing.
So I was wondering if anybody here is from that area and how true it is.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/...-levels-9084105.html - story from yesterday

am not that far away and have family in bridgewater but none in the villages affected.
Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.

Thanks Thor...so no actual state of emergency and no sign of the military being called in.

I'm not from there but used to live on the edge of the levels. I drove through there last week and it's fucked. This happens most years nowadays since the environment agency decided ditches didn't need clearing and dredging was a waste of money
This year is bad but I remember I think it was 2002, the levels were under water for months. Most years it's at least weeks. This year could likely be the same as 2002.
That's what you get when you don't maintain drainage on reclaimed land innit.
Me old boss will be fucked. His yard is out in the middle accessible only down lanes. Many folk will be in the same boat (pun intended)

The idea of it being an emergency is a bit daft really innit. You would be very daft to live there and not have taken measures for flooding...

If I've got the right area, I remember it taking over 4 hours to get from Yeovil to Bath, about 2 yrs ago? It seems to flood easy down there.......

I wouldn't go from Yeovil to Bath across the levels meself ;) but I guess you took the A37 which skirts the levels.
The levels are reclaimed land. Related to why Glastonbury has the name, The Isle of Avalon. It was literally an Island. (Though I don't think that Glastonbury is technically in the modern levels).
The levels are a huge flat basin surrounded by some big hills (for Somerset). Whereas in history, those hills drained into the mire, since the land was drained, they now drain into I think 3 main rivers. At least one of which (the Parret) is tidal for a long way inland. The result is that they are incredibly vulnerable to flooding. This can be a boon. Many birds for example, love it. Willow, loves it. Hence that being a principle crop of the levels. But. If the network of drainage ditches is not kept clear, water literally has no way to escape and it will sit in the basin for months. Despite the costly efforts to pump it out.
The locals know this and aint best pleased that the agencies don't listen. Iirc, there is also pressure on those agencies from conservationists who think it should be left to go back to it's natural state.
It's a big area. With lots of folk living in it...

I lived there for 10 years, the ditches(reams) have not been cleaned out since 2001, usual excuse not enough money, the Levels always flood in the winter, its a fact of life if you live there, its below sea level. Somerset is named after the "Summer people" who lived there in the marsh villages and retreated to the hills in the winter, the levels in winter are not fit for man or beast.

Been through Somerset, Mendip hills and the flooding is taking hold - in Wiltshire, Avebury, Silbury hill (has a moat) Long barrow, the dried out stream is now a huge river, the canals are level with the roads, fields are turning into lakes and the B roads are a right state, better off with a canoe than car.
Zero ditch dredging was such a great idea
