I could mention tonnes of stuff but right now this one comes to mind, Billy Liar - awesome writing,
A truth that's told with bad intent beats all the lies you can invent.

Tv programs?

For me the its got to be The X-files. Taught me something about critical thinking and that the truth is out there. And also, trust no cigarette smoking middle-aged men who work for shadowy government agencies. :D

BBC Survivors aired in the 70's written by Terry Nation (not the crappy one from a few yrs ago).

Made me realise just how fragile our so called civilisation is and how quickly it could all break down.

Back in the 70's I used to like watching MASH. Great humour (that thoroughly crushed the myth that Americans don't 'get' sarcasm) but without sanitizing the madness of war. Very poignant.

Chocky's Children. One freaky assed kids program that was.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Quantum Leap, it got me thinking about the nature of reality as a teenage lad.

Was that based on John Wyndham's book, 'Chocky'? That was a cracking story.

I didn't know, but by the power of google it turns out that it was.

I'm tempted to get the book now and have a read, as the program itself was just brilliant in its day

I watched Threads again very recently - it's still shocking. Couldn't get it out of my head for days.

I'd recommend it. I got a set of Wyndham books, including that one, for my 11th birthday, & loved them. But they're not aimed at that age group, and I've read some since & found them to be just as good.

Same here QS.
I suppose because it's not really fiction, more certainty.
Remember the next day after it aired, everyone was talking about it or asking to please not talk about it.
I've never seen a reaction like it before or since.

No surprise they hide it for a couple of decades.

John Wyndam started my love of Sci fi. We had to study Day of The Triffids for my GCE English Lit. Absolutely love that book. He wrote some great stuff.

DARK SHADOWS a Tv series with Barnabas Collins, a vampire, in the70's, taught me how TV is also used to calm down people,
as a soothing programmer through entertainment. (Canal 9, 1972) - YouTube
