This is hot topic here now owning your own home vs renting the average house here where I live, is between $100,000 and $250,000
And with a deposit of nearly 20% of house price it's making it harder for peoples to get into their first homes

So lets say 20% of a house that' costs 250,000 is approx $50,000 deposit + you will have lawyers fees as well, sometimes the banks cover this cost
and sometimes they won't with Insurance Contents and House Insurance as well
Then you've got up keep which costs, and if you can't do it yourself you have too hire someone too do it for you, and that costs $$$$$$

And you've got Rates as well I pay about $2400 a year on rates atm that's about $600 a quarter more fucking $$$$$

The average yearly/weekly income doesn't even cover half this shit

Now with renting rents here is about 200, to 250 per week with a abond and usually four weeks in advance, you've got no over heads you don't own the house,

So who is better off me you or depree

It's pretty much the same over here bc. The average person has little chance of setting foot on the property ladder now. Well, anyone south of Birmingham anyway. To be fair though, rents aint cheap either. Do you have summat like the 'buy to let' mortgage over there? Which gives landlords cheap deals on buying up property that anyone wanting to live in a house can't get. These things are criminal imho.

I went to Wimbledon a few years ago, I was lucky enough to get tickets. As I was walking from the tube station to the venue, I was taking in the surroundings and it's a pleasant enough suburban area, and I was thinking "it would be alright to live here". It's nothing special or out of the ordinary, but it's a decent area.

www.rightmove.co.uk/property/Wimbledon.html

The average price for a flat in Wimbledon is £456,000, the average price for a small house is £1,238,000, and the average price for a detached house is £2,473,000. If you're a kid growing up in Wimbledon, unless your parents give you their house you've got almost no chance of living to the same standard as your parents, and probably minimal chance of even continuing to live in Wimbledon. That's not even the most extortionately priced part of London by any means.

London is particularly ridiculous, but house prices are such a massive drain on people, particularly young people, all over Britain. Yet it's still reported as bad news when house prices go down!

It's just a pile of bricks with some plumbing and electric connection.
I've never got my head around it tbh, I rent , I don't like it but that's reality.

The scam at least here is in the land price. If you go 100 to 200 km's out of any capital city in oz you can get land for $300 an acre. Often you cant find 1 acre obviously, you need to buy a bigger piece of land as that is what is typically on offer, but it does work out to 300 an acre or similar in many places.

If you convert that to your average suburban detached home on lets say just under 700 square meters of land, then thats about 6 blocks to the acre. 300/6 = 50 bucks.

so 50 bucks for 700 sq m of land. Even if you calculate the rural land at $1k an acre (its usually less than that and 300 is fair in many places, you can buy rural land for 300 an acre) .. youre still talking under 200 bucks for 700 m sq.

But in the cities you now pay $200,000 dollars typically for 6-700 sq m of land, not 200 dollars. And thats seriously just the entry level suburbs in many places! Often the land is much more than that in many suburbs of the capital cities. Dont even ask about inner suburban sydney for example.

And the councils charge rates by property value, and of course this includes the land value.

Now while my example is rather simplistic and oz specific (since the country is mostly unoccupied by people here) and hasnt factored in utilities and such, you can still see how skewed thing are, and how governments, corporations and councils benefit from this inflated land value, not to mention the banks.

So yep just a pile of bricks etc but on an overpriced bit of land here. Which makes the whole thing even more overpriced. Though i do sense a tumble here as we've had 15 or so interest rate cuts which is unprecedented, and oz is now at historic low interest rates. Which simply means people arent buying in.

As long as corporations, governments (same thing) and councils (again same) inflate land prices then houses will cost more than they really should. I suppose even agenda 21 ties into some of this, as they now try limit the urban boundaries of cities, they draw a line and say hey thats it youre not going past there, which further adds to inflated land prices.

But I'm always amazed that we "the people" let these councils and governments do this kind of thing.

Gerd knows we're all quick enough to invade other people's countries and grab their stuff. How come we can never find the nerve to invade our own country and grab a bit of what we were BORN to?
