The Battle of the Beanfield took place over several hours on the afternoon of Saturday 1 June 1985 when Wiltshire Police prevented a vehicle convoy of several hundred new age travellers, known as "The Convoy" and referred to in the media as the "Peace Convoy" from setting up at the 11th Stonehenge Free Festival at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England "Basically the police were extremely violent and beat up men and women with children." The whole reason that the government was so eager to stop the festival was the law which stated that "after 12 years of gathering in the same place of celebration a national event automatically came into being" and as a national event they would have been unable to prevent it from occurring again in the future". wikipedia

The goverment pretty much destroyed this movement in the uk ,many travellers sodded off to Europe, I lived in a truck for 10 years ,its a good life when the police and council arent breathing down your collar, plus the locals smashing windows ,slashing tyres and putting club hammers though the coach work! In the end i had to parkup to repair failed head gasket and the council towed it away never to be seen again ,was my bloody home and they made me homeless!
Im not that tec headed, to post links to you tube , but the, Travellers world in Action, on you tube is pretty good .
And Traveller Dave. com is worth a look if you love old buses and trucks like me ..

Your experience sounds about par for the course swallow. Sadly you're right that the traveller movement is now all but gone. The last folk basically not doing much travelling any more. Stuck on camps and split up for the most part.

Still i said it at the time and i'll say it again. The night the CJB went through there were 30k travellers in Britain, officially.
Only about 300 people turned up to lobby their mp and we got the shit kicked out of us. What everyone else was doing that night i really don't know but i am to this day, disappointed.

As I'm sure Swallow knows, the Beanfield was far from an isolated incident. It was however, the worst example of it's kind that I know of. It's something that still pisses me off to this day. I was lucky and not there on the day. Friends weren't so lucky :(

Boy I did enjoy the subsequent exclusion zone years though :) Helicopter search lights raining down on you as you pixied your way through the fields :D Fond memories of shits and giggles ;)
