Years back they were almost on every street corner dancing and singing in white robes, many had joined them and lived in a commune type situation.I mean it was big and that's saying a lot for these parts.

I never see any of them anywhere now, does someone know what happened to the movement and if it has lost interest for new people to join?

I was coming out of a shop on Oxford Street a couple of months ago and low and behold, the Hari Krishna gang in orange sang and danced past me. Don't know about anywhere else but they are still doing their thing in Oxford Street (London).

Yes thinking back it was orange,I didn't even know if anyone here knew what a hari krishna was.
I knew a couple of guys who were brothers ,they were poor as hell and I think the younger brother joined them to get a meal, their father was a self serving drunk and mean to them,I was at their house one day when the father came home and started threatening them,I felt sorry for those guys to this day.And I should have kicked their fathers drunk ass and knocked out some teeth at least, back then.
They were nice guys and didn't deserve his mean ass.

Dear OP,

Hmmm, I don't know. Different, more subtle approach? Loss of popularity?

Like I mentioned some joined for a regular meal and a safe place, with a soft bed, they aren't as active that particular group, some of the cults are more appealing to potential members for the same reasons food and shelter, and people who will protect the weak members from the abuse they suffered at the hands of a monster in the former life situation.

But even then if some of the cult leaders are motivated by a sex craving the group will suffer, and those type should be eliminated and sent on their way a good cult needs to have concerned enforcers who will protect the weak.

Interesting, and undoubtedly a sound reason. I really haven't thought about the loss of common visibility of the HK folks. Very good question. The fad passed? Matured? The HK are still out there, but no, they aren't as visible - in my experience, at least.

I would just like to mention your post about the loses you have went through in the other thread is very moving, and I sympathize with you greatly,I also have seen folk die early from cancer, that spreads quick, and some of these men looked robust and healthy,as you put it barrel chested types.
My best to you

I felt like posting this to you in my thread is more appropriate and personally more meaningful, you worded your posts beautiful and moving

I remeber seeing them when I was realy little. In fact I remember seeing all sorts - the Krishnas, there would be other people around too standing there preaching the bible and/or handing out leaflets, groups of teenagers dancing or rapping, other general street musicians. And now... all gone.

I don't think I've seen any form of such in about five years, maybe more.

It's sad really.

Maybe there was some little law passed that overly zealous councils have blanket-enforced.

Perhaps the newer, trendier cults have more appeal. Better clothes and haircuts. The Krishna's are sooo 1970's.

I think your on to something, the clothes they had to wear, the bald head, the chanting, and a restricted diet, probably not much fun being in a cult like that.

The demise of the movements most iconic member, George Harrison, probably knocked some shine off as well.

Aren't the Krishna's the ones that used to hand out flowers at airports?

''God would like you to have this flower'' they'd say, then rattle the collection tin if you took it. Or even if you didn't...

Not seen/heard about em for years.

You just know they hadn't given it all much thought when you see things like that. :)

Who can re member the story about the hari krishna guy that cut the head of one of the leaders in the soho center .Read it in a book think it was 70s or 80s .It was after some big leader died and the new leader got everyone taaking lsd and started having sex with the female devotees so they could purify their karma :umm:

Anyway one of the devotees had a bad trip there and thought this leader was really the anti christ :umm: and was caught in a shop doorway think oxford street with a plastic bag with the new leaders head inside. :umm:

Warning do not mix lsd with religion.

My brother was krishana for a bit

he was also cahtolic , mormon and satanist

I don't know but maybe some folk become Krishinas because they feel lost and want to belong to a group for a sense of belonging
