I do think we humans have a very inflated view of our importance in the universe.

Our scientists tell us it is likely there are upwards of 10,000 intelligent civilisations just in our Milky Way galaxy. Logic suggests that some of these - maybe even thousands of them - are more advanced in the brain department. Perhaps they even exist as pure energy - like the Vorlons. ;)

I have discovered something hidden in plain sight which is proof of evolution, if Darwin's theory is to be believed then the fact is that eventually a puddle of shit will evolve into something which can walk and talk, and we have politicians, (now thats absolute proof)

None of this discussion so far has even touched on proof. It has all been about evidence. Why bring up proof now?

The argument for intelligence or a mind being involved in encoding the masses of sepcified information on the DNA molecule is that information (not data, like you suggest when you mention photons hitting a screen or being able to see a star through a telescope) is always the result of mental activity. All human experience and scientific observation point to this fact.

Also if you read back you will notice that I have not mentioned God at all. My interest in this subject is not proving God exists, rather casting doubt on the theory of evolution, which I believe has nothing going for it whatsoever. So while I can not prove that God made DNA I believe that the incredible complexity of DNA makes it most likely that it is the result of a mind at work. Information simply does not spring from nothing, or grow from nothing. If it did then show me evidence of how this might have happened. As it stands, with the backing of basically anyone who knows the meaning of the word information, DNA is quite clearly information, just as computer code, writing or mathematics can be considered information.

If you come across a set of blueprints detailing how to build a car you are most likely to presume it is the work of some intelligent being communicating a message so that the invention that was spawned in their imagination can be built in reality.

Just as if you find the plans that detail how to build a living being written in its own unique code you would be most likely to presume, again, that this is the work of a mind.

Just saying there is no evidence either way is woefully inadequate. The information on the DNA molecule had to come from somewhere, and seeing as information only springs from intelligence then it is hardly a stretch to surmise that intelligence or a mind is responsible for the information on the DNA molecule. Despite denying it these facts are obviously evidence for DNA being created or written by something.

On the other hand nowhere in the universe has anyone ever seen complex information coming into being as a result of material processes. That is why you tried to purport that a load of photons hitting a screen is actually information rather than data.

If you can point to one piece of evidence that shows that information can come about via purely natural processes with a result similar to writing, for example, or the digital code contained on the DNA molecule, then you might start to convince someone, but as it is, you (and everyone else in the world) has got zip.

Then that goes back to my earlier post doesn't it.

Slightly tangential I know, but when you start talking about the possibility of other civilisations in the universe/galaxy the devout "atheists" as well as the devout "religionists" start shifting uncomfortably in their seats!

We are so heavily invested in the concept of our species being top dog, that the thought that we may be regarded by other species as rather primitive organisms makes us a bit uneasy.

Drake equation and Kardashev scale are the things to look for.
Guesstimates vary wildly ofc but even if you look at it pessimisticly there has to be thousands of potential planets.
It's the silence and lack of observation that's of interest and imho civilizations probably do not pass type 1 without self annihilation

I think it was Dr Drake himself , around about 1960, who came up with the figure of 10,000.

His equation has variables of course. I understand the range covers a low of 1000 to a high of 100,000 Milky Way civilisations.

Not at all. I was only discussing where the information in the DNA molecule came from. If you accept the possiblility that "aliens messed with monkey DNA", then you at least accept the validity of the design argument. I'm not saying it has been proven, just that design in nature, especially DNA information, is more likely to be the case than it having evolved from nothing.

The design argument has validity in as far as it goes with aliens creating humans.
Its actually possible.

A 'God' creating the entire universe though along with intentionally designing every single atom within it is a complete mindfuck :)
It also begs the question, who designed the designer and so on. Its an anthropomorphic question IMHO, us humans just assume creation in everything because we create things ourselves.

That's the thing though. A 'God' or at the very least, some kind of intelligence creating substance that is in itself capable of development or 'evolution' makes absolute sense to me.

As to what created such a being in the first place, given what it is evidently capable of creating itself, I have little difficulty in believing it just always was/will be. This is only a recent thing however, and is coming from someone who doesn't have a religious bone in his body. That's not to say I wouldn't like one in me, though. :norty:

I was only arguing for the design argument, not God. If you read through the thread you will see I was not the one who mentioned God. If you think the answer to the question of how DNA information appeared could be aliens, then you have every right to that opinion. It is certainly more likely to be true than the idea that DNA information arose from chemicals in a pre-biotic soup. Who designed the designer? A good question. Who designed the alien designers? More alien designers? If the idea that alien designers need not be investigated in an argument about the existence of DNA, then the idea that God created DNA information needs no further investigation either.

The important point is that evolution is incapable of gradually creating new plans for animals and plants, because it would need masses of new correct information in the genome. Masses of specific information does not simply appear out of thin air, and genetic mutations in the DNA would only destroy the pre-existing, faultless code.

Think what you like about where this information came from. The fact is that it is information, and information comes from a mind. Darwin was wrong.

Well, I actually see DNA itself as being a natural occurrence, however I see human complexity as being a non-natural occurrence if that makes any sense :)

IMHO we stand so apart from the other animals and there is little in the way of transition species that darwins theory doesn't fit us. In fact it fits all life we can see EXCEPT us specifically.
Perhaps natural evolution could occur eventually and lead to humans but not IMHO given the short timescale for homo sapiens sapiens.
Theres some huge gaps that need to be filled and decent scientists do admit this.

Theres also the question of why complex evolved life is not visible elsewhere in the galaxy and IMHO its because most if not all life ends up killing itself around the first point of the kardashev scale.

We spend our lives fighting Darwinism! ;)

For example, survival of the fittest in order to improve the species. We spend billions trying to assist those who contribute either nothing, or contribute negatively, to homo sapiens's gene pool.

I think we're on the same page, inasmuch as our capability to reason, plan and choose what to focus our attention on does indeed appear to be somewhat 'otherworldly', where every other creature we share our planet with seems capable of functioning on instinct and very basic thought processes.

You could say we're just as capable and demonstrate this on a daily basis, but what sets us apart is our ability to choose to live our lives like that, or to actually imagine something other than that.

I believe this to be where the old 'in my image' cliche gets dropped in/stems from.

This potential does not make us better than any other living thing, but it certainly makes us different, imo. Energy manipulation and how our 'minds' fit in with that is something we're just beginning to comprehend (or re-member) for example. If you concede the universe is a 'mental' construct, or at least began that way, you could reasonably argue that we are all gods of our own worlds in some way, would that we realise it.

I think you are right.
Wasn't Darwin a darling of the early eugenecists? Which creates an odd dichotomy because weren't they also part of the early Fabian socialist crowd which seems to be at odds with "survival of the fittest" ideology because surely Socilism has always purported to be against that doctrine.
Doublespeak? I dunno but someone is speaking out of two mouths.

I think you have put your finger on it!

Many who parade their "atheism" and "humanism" come over all coy when it is put to them that if we are truly nothing special/God created etc, why do we get so sentimental about homo sapiens's own evolution... and, importantly, why do we try to interfere with it so much?

Furthermore why are we so sanctimonious about death? A friend of mine is an organist at a crematorium and he tells me the humanist funerals are the worst in terms of their maudlin, sentimental sanctimoniousness! :D
