This trend will only go upwards obviously.

A quarter of young people in the UK now live with their parents, official figures show.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said more than 3.3 million adults between the ages of 20 and 34 were living with parents in 2013, 26% of that age group.

The number has increased by a quarter, or 669,000 people, since 1996.

This is despite the fact that the number of 20 to 34-year-olds in the UK remains almost the same, the ONS said.

In 1996, the earliest year for which comparable statistics are available, there were 2.7m 20 to 34-year-olds living in the family home - 21% of the age group at that time.

The ONS also found young men were more likely to live at home than women. One in three men live with their parents, compared with one in five women.

Yep, dont think most guys want to live with their mother.

But the prospect of never ending rent or a mortgage versus little or no financial obligations in that respect... begins to tip the balance.

You need a credit history in the UK now to just rent a house, as I found out to my horror when I came back recently

I think the average salary where I live is about £23,000, whereas the average house price is over £220,000. Of course, most 20-34 year-olds are paid far less than £23,000. People are still glad to see house prices go up, though, despite the fact that they're royally fucking their own kids over.

Speaking to a bloke from our housing association last week. He told me it's hard enough finding places for homeless parents with kids, single blokes on their own have no chance whatsoever. A bit grim isn't it? :(

I don't think anyone over the age of 24 should really be considered a young person, especially not anyone over the age of 30 :conf:

34 is six years away from middle aged. I can lose six years sitting on the toilet. Makes the whole saga sound less shit than it actually is.

Single, able-bodied young men/women have absolutely no recourse to 'affordable'/social housing, either. Mind you, few do these days...

Welcome to the UK where subsidies are the only way people can have a life.

Did you notice the laws on building extensions were relaxed a bit not long ago. ;)
