people who go to foodbanks do not have money to buy food - we have recently been working with a local foodbank giving free debt advice and advocacy to those needing to use it. In order to qualify for help people not only have to prove their finances but have home visits and cupboards checked (something i personally disagree with but it is what it is) these people could not buy from a corner shop even if they wanted to.

Why are highstreets dying? because tax avoiding large corporations are putting local businesses out of business. Because tax credits top up the wages of those working for said corporations but there is little help for small business owners.

Why are people becoming poorer? because of government austerity measures that have seen wages drop in real terms, universal beneftits reduced, privatisation of utilities seeing huge bill increases which go to shareholders not into repair and infrastructure. Because benefits sanctions are driving people into further poverty.

Because the government have failed to tackle rents and house prices and pay day lenders never mind banks as a whole

You cannot just rock up to a foodbank and fill ya boots - most people would prefer not to use foodbanks as it is not like you even get a choice as to what food you get

Well, I agree with her. If we closed all food banks tomorrow, obviously there would instantly be no more poverty. People deliberately make themselves poor to take advantage of the situation. All the people that currently use them would start shitting money, and everything would turn out fine, I'm sure. It's not as if there's been a survey recently which suggests that nearly half the population of London can't meet their housing costs. I can't believe people are disagreeing with her. Why don't all poor people just apply to appear on Strictly Come Dancing, like the esteemed Ms. Currie did?
