I live in Britain.
This story has like zero impact for Britons (Though I am sure many of us empathise with the friends and families).
Yet it has been headline news for days and days. News bulletins devote huge chunks of valuable airtime to it.
Why?
Could it be to divert the public's attention from other more 'important' developments in the World?

Freescale Collaborates with Avionics Manufacturers to Facilitate Their Certification of Systems Using Multicore Processors

New working group focusing on commercial off-the-shelf multicore processing used in commercial avionics


AUSTIN, Texas, Sep 14, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) has formed a working group with top North American and European commercial avionics manufacturers to define their information requirements for advanced Freescale multicore processors being used in commercial avionics applications.


The Multicore for Avionics(MCFA) working group was established to help commercial avionics companies fully leverage the performance, power and size advantages of Freescale's sophisticated commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) embedded multicore processors, such as the eight-core QorIQ P4080 device.

The MCFA working group includes representatives from BAE Systems, BARCO, Boeing, EADS, ELBIT, GE Aviation, Hamilton Sunstrand, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, Thales and Freescale Semiconductor.

"Highly advanced multicore processors based on Power Architecture(R) technology are ideally suited to meet the demanding requirements of commercial avionics applications," said Glenn Beck, avionics marketing manager for Freescale's Networking Processor Division. "As a long-time provider of reliable, high-performance processors to the commercial avionics market, Freescale is pleased to play a leading role in helping top avionics companies realize the benefits of the latest advanced semiconductor designs."

This week the DO-254 Users Group heard an MCFA proposal for addressing the unique advantages and challenges sophisticated multicore technology presents for avionics certification processes. The proposal is the result of an assessment by the MCFA working group and includes recommendations for a common, consistent certification methodology.

"Future avionics systems will benefit from the integration provided by multicore SoCs as the industry strives to provide safer, lighter and feature-rich commercial aircraft," said Greg Arundale of Rockwell Collins. "The work that has come from the MCFA working group provides a crucial step toward allowing us to take advantage of next-generation processors provided by the electronics component industry."

"The members of the MCFA working group have come together to deal with this challenge," said Dr. Fred Fisher of the Aerospace Vehicle Systems Institute (AVSI). "Their proposal provides the direction needed for the certification of systems with complex SoC microprocessors."

Another day, another blacker-than-black materials science breakthrough aimed at making stealthy objects even stealthier. A U. of Michigan researcher and his colleagues has created a new kind of nanostructured coating made of carbon nanotubes that could cloak an aircraft in complete blackness, concealing it in the visible range and beyond (think: radar). Suspended in paint, the nanomaterial could be rolled right onto aircraft to turn them super-black and super-stealthy.

The Michigan team's tech taps one of the many amazing characteristics of carbon nanotubes--tiny yet long tubular structures made of pure carbon that have some pretty amazing conductive properties--to more or less absorb every bit of light that strikes an object. Grown on the surface of an object, they can absorb an extremely broad spectrum of light, from radio right on up to ultraviolet. That means that, unlike other metamaterials that are more spectrum specific, they can cloak an object not only from visible light, but from things like radar as well.

But it's not as easy as simply slapping a coat of paint on an aircraft. In order to ensure that the nanotubes neither reflect nor scatter any light, the nanotubes have to be grown with some space in between them so their refraction index is very similar to that of the surrounding air. This keeps light from scattering out of the little forests of nanotubes without being absorbed, but it's also kind of painstaking.

Thus far, the Michigan team has only grown nanotubes on a variety of small, three-dimensional objects because doing so is a high-temperature, high-pressure process--one that you wouldn't want to put a multi-million dollar fighter jet through, even if you could. But the team thinks it should be possible to grow the nanotubes on tiny particles and then suspend them in paint that can be rolled onto larger objects like aircraft.
