Just announced.....
Cyprus and Russia - what's the difference (aside from the fact that the former was a money laundering offshore center of the latter until last year of course)?

If you said one is a lackey to statist, selfish banker interests, and after having its economy thoroughly destroyed by the great doomed European sociopolitical (and pathological) experiment, came crawling back to its Eurozone masters, while the other couldn't care one bit about Pax Petrodollariana and the global central bank cabal, you are right. In which case it will also be clear why a few hours ago that joke of a rating agency, Standard & Poor's, which also earlier announced it was "affirming" France at an AA rating making it very clear it will no longer accept being sued for telling the truth and downgrading sovereigns or otherwise have its offices abroad raided, not only upgraded Cyprus from B- to B (please deposits your funds in Cyprus banks now: they are safe, S&P promises), but - far more importantly - delivered a political message to the Kremlin, and downgraded Russia from BBB to BBB-, one short notch away from junk status. This was the first downgrade of Russia by S&P since December 2008.
Russia's response was prompt.

First, in retaliation to the downgrade, Russian economy minister Alexei Ulyukaev said S&P’s downgrade of Russia’s rating was expected by investors, won’t significantly change their behavior, adding the obvious that the decision to cut Russia’s rating was partly political, partly based on economic situation. In other words, entirely symbolic - it is not as if Russia has access to bond markets anyway, plus as we wrote earlier this week in "Why Putin Is Smiling At The Bond Market's Blockade Of Russia", it is not as if it needs them.

But far more importantly, and ahead of yet another round of western sanctions which appears imminent unless Obama is to look even more powerless than he currently is (granted, a difficult achievement), Russian presidential adviser Sergei Glazyev proposed plan of 15 measures to protect country’s economy if sanctions applied, Vedomosti newspaper reports, citing Glazyev’s letter to Finance Ministry. According to Vedomosti as Bloomberg reported, Glazyev proposed:

Russia should withdraw all assets, accounts in dollars, euros from NATO countries to neutral ones
Russia should start selling NATO member sovereign bonds before Russia’s foreign-currency accounts are frozen
Central bank should reduce dollar assets, sell sovereign bonds of countries that support sanctions
Russia should limit commercial banks’ FX assets to prevent speculation on ruble, capital outflows
Central bank should increase money supply so that state cos., banks may refinance foreign loans
Russia should use national currencies in trade with customs Union members, other non-dollar, non-euro partners
In other words, a full-blown scorched earth campaign by Russia.
Granted, Russian holdings of US Treasurys are not that substantial (and could be monetized entirely in three months of POMO by the Fed), and western financial linkages to Russia, aside from trade routes, are not life-threatening, but if Russia were to take the baton, and other BRIC countries, already furious by the recent US decision to not boost their IMF status, follow suit, then Obama's life is about to become a living nightmare. Especially, if that most important BRIC member - China - does any of the many things it can do to indicate if, in this brand new Cold War, it is with or against the US...

I suppose it all depends how badly Moscow feels this will affect them if they decide to take up some or all of Glazyev's proposals.
If they do, then I have to agree with the writer....the petrodollar could indeed implode almost overnight.

It does really not surprise that Russia's not standing idle in this situation. In their own view, they're just protecting their best interest, and of course they will somehow retaliate agaisnt any sanctions US/EU will put on place. Too bad the Finnish fuckwits have went down the EU shithole. Russia is one of the main business partners of Finland, our economy will be fucked if Russia decides to back off. On the other hand, those countries outside of NATO and/or EU might gain a lot from this.

Firstly, If one of our forum finance wizards could answer a question for me: is Russia's Central Bank a central bank in the true sense of the word, ie the state bank not a pseudo central bank like the Federal Reserve in the US?
If it is a true central bank it would do Russia well to go it alone. Russia has more than enough natural resources to be self-sufficient outside the petro-dollar/IMF system and actually prosper instead of going down like a lead balloon as the US and other G nations seem to be doing in the near future.
Russia would do well sticking with the other BRIC nations and it has plenty of gold and resources to trade with it's less antagonistic non BRIC nations.
Putin can just sit there peacefully and resolutely waiting out all the attempts to draw it into conflict until the US starts to collapse like a souffle' - One big massive, immovable Russian Bear.

My understanding is that yes...the bank is a central bank as are I believe their top 5.....I'm sure WuB or Andy will correct me if I'm wrong.

Putin/Mededev are already talking/sorting their own 'credit/debit card outside the Visa card etc for international transactions.

Visa are already spitting at Obamamama's sanctions as they have affected their profits just in one month....there's an article about it on Zerohedge.

I have to pop out, but I'll see if I can find the Visa article...basically the sanctions are backfiring on the west.

I currently have this as my screensaver.....sets me up for the day over my morning brew....

Thanks Jane :)
I think what we are going to witness in the next few years is a financial equivalent of the KT extinction event. The dinosaurs (Hybrid Pseudo Central/Private banking) will be toast. Unfortunately, humanity in general, is going to suffer the death throes rather than the elites who will Jet off to their private island sanctuaries to weather the storm. Once the storm clears they will emerge from their protected enclaves to re-establish the status quo.
Of course, this doesn't have to happen - but Come Dancing and other TV dirge has much more appeal than facing reality and the action required to prevent a global financial catastrophe and the attendant social upheaval and suffering these events will create.

p.s. to my post above^^^

Those of us that aware of what is and will be coming need to make a decision or two.

1. Are we going to keep spreading the word and trying to educate the masses of sleepy folk in order to mobilize the good folk of the world to create a better future?
Or -
2. Start getting together in self supporting communities so we also can weather the storm. And, in this case, prevent that evil status quo being re-established after the devastation subsides?

Events, worldwide, are heading inexorably to a few predicted scenarios - and yet we seem unable, collectively, to determine what we are going to do....in any situation.

I'm going with option 2.....always have...trusted that whoever walks into my life either has something I will learn from them, or they have something to learn from me, and it's always worked and good friendships have been forged....quality friendships.

It's going to sound absolutely appalling, but if the really worst case scenario happens and life goes to hell in a hand basket.......*waits for Andy to make an appearance and shoot her down in flames*..........., then my view is, the fewer people that are 'preped' the better. Think about it, there are a few thousand hardened 'prepers' in this country, many of who I would bet are going to be heading up to the Lakes etc. until things calm down. Anyway that's for the Survival section.

Getting back to the OP, I had a hunt around and couldn't find that article about Visa. I even had a look over on Bloomberg because I paid them a visit today too....damned if I can find it.

I tend to agree - but lets not forget that an awakening can come sooner or later.
For example - when I was young I was very switched on and aware to how the world worked around me. Then, I took a detour - and did the whole career, marriage, children thing - but even then my aim was to use the system to get out of it. I only engaged in the system long enought to drop out.
That was a naive proposition - the reality is that - The more people tolerate the system the longer they will be enslave by it. If you make a pact with the devil - the reality is you will fail and fall victim to the shenanigans and manipulations of the first lawyer....Old Toby himself :D
