WASHINGTON – At a time when states are struggling to reduce bloated prison populations and tight budgets, a private prison management company is offering to buy prisons in exchange for various considerations, including a controversial guarantee that the governments maintain a 90% occupancy rate for at least 20 years.

So they want the government to essentially promise to do nowt to reduce crime? Lock the fuckers up and tell them they're doing their bit for the economy.

I cant watch the vid now...but I know a bit about the Bush admin and how Cheney, who holds iirc something like 80 mill of Vanguard stock, was involved with privatising prisons, with Vanguard acquiring or running them. They got the ball rolling on a big shift to private prisons..and we all know private must = profit. And you cant profit from empty cells.

As MM has said elsewhere, im sure prisoners will be used as cheap (slave) labour more and more as time goes on.

G'day.

I think this is the documentary that I have that discusses the privatisation of American prisons.

Alright, I'm skipping through the documentary at the moment and one fact is that the prison system in America has a budget of over $40 billion per year, 2,000 institutions holding over 2 million prisoners. ... 20:40 min mark.

Well, the statistics for the rise in private prisons isn't on that documentary. I've just checked another on the external drive and it wasn't on that one either. I've gotta go out now, so I'll have a look around for the documentary that it was on later and if I find it I'll add a post for it. :thumbup:

The system is a big mess. They have judges putting juveniles in prison for next to nothing because some company gets paid for every person in there and you have prisoners making things for slave wages which of course means that outside business which pays at least minimum wage can not compete. A big problem indeed.
