Irony or just another sick example of double standards, selling the shite in one breath and condemning it in the next?

The US says it fears Syria's President Bashar al-Assad may resort to using chemical weapons against his people.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the US was concerned that such an action might be taken by "an increasingly beleaguered regime".

And just another example of how its ok for them but not ok for others to do it.

The reality is its not OK for ANY of them to do it.

Possible translation: we were hoping to overthrow this regime by arming some militia, but it might not work, so we might use chemical weapons next, and then blame it on them as a pretext to move to a full NATO occupation.

Absobloodylutely andy. It does beggar belief though, the bare faced, brazen cheek.
To have these two tales literally running alongside each other as they are. Do they think we can't see it or that we just don't care or that even if we do care it's yah boo sux to us all? Again this is another damning condemnation of the very 'democracy' that the West is foisting upon the World.

I think that's a fair speculation wub. Though even if any looming chemical attack in Syria were to be perpetrated by Assad, do we have any doubt that in a few years there would be an investigation, similar to the one announced in the second article, that names the suppliers of said chemicals as involving Western businesses?

If I were running a bookmaker, I wouldn't take any bets on it, put it that way.

"The leading British expert on chemical warfare, Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, who used to work at the Porton Down establishment - Britain's military scientific facility - is discussing with the Kurdish government how to decontaminate Halabja."

Porton Down, World renowned creators and perfectors of chemical and biological weapons. No doubt involved in the supply chain somewhere

From that Okinawa article:

Project 112 proposed experiments in "tropical climates" and, to evade laws regulating human testing in the U.S., it suggested the use of overseas "satellite sites."

Nice

Best we don't mention Korea or Vietnam eh ;)

EDIT: Doh! Andy you just linked to an article mentioning Vietnam....

I wasn't aware of this WW2 incident (taken from the second article andy linked):

On December 2, 1943 the Luftwaffe flew down the Italian coast and arrived at Bari which was vastly overcrowded with US ships in the harbor, which itself was "lit up like a Christmas tree." In the course of German bombing seventeen Allied ships were sunk and the John Harvey "dissolved in a massive explosion" all hands blown to bits. Hundreds died in an instant but the worst was yet to come. As the Mustard gas mixed with oil and contaminants in the water it released a deadly cloud which killed thousands, mostly Italian citizens - in their own homes in Bari. Whether any may have been saved will never be known, but since the US withheld the reason for the mysterious poisoning in order to cover up their criminality, any chances for clinical assistance was quickly lost. Land of the free and home of the brave.

Thousands of US troops arrive near Syrian shore on USS Eisenhower
The USS Eisenhower, an American aircraft carrier that holds eight fighter bomber squadrons and 8,000 men, arrived at the Syrian coast yesterday in the midst of a heavy storm, indicating US preparation for a potential ground intervention.

While the Obama administration has not announced any sort of American-led military intervention in the war-torn country, the US is now ready to launch such action “within days” if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad decides to use chemical weapons against the opposition, the Times reports.

Some have suggested that the Assad regime may use chemical weapons against the opposition fighters in the coming days or weeks.

The arrival of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of the 11 US Navy aircraft carriers that has the capacity to hold thousands of men, is now stationed at the coast of Syria, DEBKAfile reports. The aircraft carrier joined the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, which holds about 2,500 Marines.

“We have (US) special operations forces at the right posture, they don’t have to be sent,” an unnamed US official told The Australian, which suggested that US military troops are already near Syria and ready to intervene in the conflict, if necessary.

If the US decides to intervene militarily in Syria, it now has at its disposal 10,000 fighting men, 17 warships, 70 fighter-bombers, 10 destroyers and frigates and a guided military cruises. Some of the vessels are also equipped with Aegis missile interceptors to shoot down any missiles Syria might have at hand, according to DEBKAfile.

“The muscle is already there to be flexed,” a US official told the London Times about the US military’s presence outside of Syria. “It’s premature to say what could happen if a decision is made to intervene. That hasn’t taken shape, we’ve not reached that kind of decision. There are a lot of options, but it [military action] could be launched rapidly, within days.”

The move comes after NATO made a significant strategic decision Tuesday to deploy Patriot Air and Missile Defense Systems in Turkey on the border of Syria where opposition groups have the stronghold. The defense would be able to protect Turkey from potential Syrian missiles that could contain chemical weapons, as well as intimidate Syrian Air Force pilots from bombing the northern Syria border towns, which the armed rebels control. Syria is thought to have about 700 missiles.

“The protection from NATO will be three dimensional; one is the short-range Patriots, the second is the middle-range Terminal High Altitude Air Defense [THAD] system and the last is the AEGIS system, which counters missiles that can reach outside the atmosphere,” Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.

DEBKAfile’s anonymous military sources claim the THAD and Aegis arrived at the Syrian coast aboard the USS Eisenhower.

“The United States now stands ready for direct military intervention in the Syrian conflict when the weather permits,” the news source wrote.

I don't like to say this, but once they start massing troops on the border, it's not 'if' but 'when'. The US doesn't mass 10,000 personnel on the border of a country lightly, and you'd struggle to find an example of when they don't follow the threat through.

There are other sources on this too, by the way:

marketdailynews.com/2012/12/07/nato-mili...n-in-syria-imminent/
www.globalresearch.ca/us-tightens-milita...around-syria/5314614
www.examiner.com/article/u-s-aircraft-ca...u-s-intervention-war

Many others as well, just not any of the Western mainstream press, surprisingly...

UK's Hague confirms 'evidence' of Syria chemical arms plans

British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the UK and the US have seen evidence that Syria is preparing to use chemical weapons.

Mr Hague told the BBC there was "enough evidence to know that they need a warning".

The foreign secretary did not give details, as he said the evidence had come from "intelligence sources".

A Syrian official insisted last week that it would "never, under any circumstances" use such weapons.

That statement followed a warning on Monday from US President Barack Obama that there would be consequences if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons against his people.

Mr Hague told the BBC: "The president of the United States warned of serious consequences and he means it."

Pressed in the interview by the BBC's Frank Gardner, he said he could understand why the public might be sceptical after the blunders made over Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction 10 years ago.
