They ought to quite simply cap the hours for this kind of work at the minimum wage.
If the minimum wage is 6 quid an hour and the benefit is 60 quid a week then 10 hours max.

They should also take into account how many NI contributions someone has made too and give people a decent amount of time to find a decent job.

Better still the mandatory work should be for the govt not the private sector for chrissake lol...the govt could even give people work thats in line with their qualifications and experience.

i agree entirely - the case transcript makes interesting reading - the government will no doubt appeal then change the law in their favour if they continue to lose.

Strangely they are not offering to repay the monies taken unlawfully from benefits recipients who declined to participate in the work programme.

One person who I have been helping of late has been told that in order to continue receiving their esa they must participate in some online volunteering (they are housebound) - the choices of time sink include nessie and ghost spotting via webcam - seriously!!

Heard a lawyer talking about it on the radio though - it's only a breach due to a technicality connected with the wording of legistlation. Not because it makes a mockery of human rights. He said they just need to amend the wording of existing legislation, in which case, as things stand, it'll be viewed as acceptable in the eyes of the law.
