I used to live in a town where there was a large Pakistani population. Most of them looked as though they were working.

TBH I think being unemployed is the optimum situation, if you took some of the material realities out of the equation the situation is something like:
free house for everyone
basic food allowance for everyone
more time for everyone to pursue their interests, whether indeed that be Jihad is irrelevant.

These three aims alone are enough for a revolutionary movement or political party to aspire to, and look it costs nothing.

Improvements on the status quo would be, all housing association properties being re-allocated to the local council.
Food production communised by use of waste land, former car parks and expanded allotments, from this basis of socially owned housing and food production, you would gradually remove the compulsion to trade your life, and time, for a wage in an un-fulfilling role.

Having worked in the housing sector, I wholeheartedly concur re your idea of returning all social housing to local councils.
