I could honestly sit here all day pointing out the ideological problems and contradictions inherent within it! They are just talking absolute fucking rubbish. But just to make one small point, their second mission is the following:
DEMOCRACY AND THE RULE OF LAW: Promoting Democracy And The Rule Of Law By Opposing Sharia
They want 'democracy' and the 'rule of law' to protect them against those nasty Muslims and the apparent takeover of British society by Sharia law. But they're asking for something that already exists. Their solution to this non-existent problem is literally to ask for something that already exists. They want 'our democracy' to be restored, you will see them making constant reference to 'our democracy'. But 'our democracy' hasn't gone anywhere. It was under the conditions of 'our democracy', that have existed for centuries, that Muslims were admitted to the country as migrants in the first place. It was under the conditions of ‘our democracy’ that all of the wars which involved Islamic countries were instigated, which has lead to a lot of the apparent tension. We exist under the ‘rule of law’ today, no-one anywhere is suggesting that the ‘rule of law’ be abandoned. But, again, it was under the ‘rule of law’ that mass migration occurred.
They even cite the European Court of Human Rights declaration that “sharia is incompatible with the fundamental principles of democracy”, but on another occasion I have no doubt that they would rail against the Human Rights Act as protecting Muslims in some way or other, and against the European Union as undermining ‘our democracy’. This is ‘our democracy’ that is doing everything it can to make sure that people don’t get a vote on the EU, of course!
David Cameron could respond directly to them tomorrow. He could come on TV and say “we live in a democracy, I completely believe in democracy, and we must all respect the rule of law and maintain law and order, it’s the basis of a civilised society”. And that’s the end of their protest group. Who are protesting against the erosion of something that hasn’t been eroded, asking for something to be restored that already exists, and asking for more power to be given to the people who are fucking them every day of their lives. In summary, all I was saying is that the EDL are a bit confused! We live in a state of corporate fascism, I’m under no illusion that it would fit any reasonable definition of ‘democracy’, which on Wikipedia is defined thus: “Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination”.
