I was just scanning the morning propaganda and came across this story
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24427821
Pentagon-funded Atlas robot refuses to be knocked over
Reading through a few lines jumped out...

Darpa says such robots "hold great promise for amplifying human effectiveness in defence operations".

"We do not know what military purpose it will serve but certainly it is a step towards a high-speed ground robot that could be weaponised to hunt and kill."

"Robotics has been making important strides in recent years, and these are a couple of demonstrations of the technology moving forward. However, their application may be limited to areas such as defence and, maybe specialised construction or demolition tasks. In other applications there are more efficient ways of achieving the mobility more cost effectively."

That second line is just terrifying no?

So let's have a thread about the crazy bastards at DARPA
"laws are unenforceable if the majority break them."-humanspirit,
"avoid the concept of an ambassador for truth altogether"-gilly.

It's a reflection of what we can expect technology to be used for while a bunch of psychopaths greedily pillage the world & use its resources to control the rest of us.
It would obviously better if we had robots that could run around feeding starving people, building homes, and helping the unstable or injured..... or just building other robots to do useful shit.
But no! Hunt them down and kill kill kill! Have none of these people seen how badly Terminator worked out for humanity?

Makes me shudder how they refer to hunting down & killing as 'defence'. The tossers mean ATTACK. That's what hunting down & killing is. Funny how they think they can put an acceptable complexion on it by using the exact opposite word to what they mean.

I think I saw clips of this ages ago...isn't it that thing that strides around on four legs? Can anyone find it still?

EDIT: It's in the article. Doh!
