Political thinker and academic Noam Chomsky has revealed his support for a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence.

In an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Professor Chomsky said he had ‘been following the debate with interest’, adding that he was continuing to look into the details and consequences of a Yes vote.

Professor Chomsky told RIA: “My intuition favours independence.”

The academic also spoke of his desire to see greater devolution of power across Europe, adding: “No one wants to restore the Ottoman Empire, obviously, but in some respects it had the right idea: let people manage their own affairs, with co-operative federal arrangements, and as few barriers as possible.”

A spokesman for Yes Scotland told RIA Novosti that Professor Chomsky’s backing was ‘encouraging, but not surprising’, adding: “Professor Chomsky, of course, is not a nationalist and increasing numbers of people in Scotland, particularly Labour supporters and those who have no party political affiliation at all, also see the logic of putting Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands.”

Responding to the academic’s comments, a spokesman for the pro-Union Better Together campaign said: “In Scotland, when people study the issues in detail they conclude that we are stronger and better together as part of the UK.”

Professor Chomsky, who has written over 100 books, has established himself as a leading philosopher.

In 1990, following a speech on self-determination in Glasgow, Professor Chomsky said: “Is a movement for Scottish nationalism crazy? It depends what form it takes. If it takes the form of expressing cultural values and integrating people in a more full life, that’s fine. Nationalism has a way of oppressing others.”

The political thinker added that splitting up Scotland and England could be a good thing, suggesting that the collapse of centralised powers made sense. But he added: “On the other hand you want to make sure that a move towards devolution doesn’t lead to more pressure, which it could very well do.”

Chomsky - Jock Chomsky....what the fuck has it to do with him?

Personally I would like the Jocks to get independence from UK Gulag no. 1- however, not under the conditions and leadership it is currenlty undergoing.
Salmond - Fishy fucker with dubious moral and political allegiances. He will take the Scots into the EU - out of the frying pan into the fire anyone?

I'm all for Scot independence - but only as a sovereign nation and not as party of the EU dictatorship.

Beware Tam.... throwing off one tryranny may leave you vulnerable to some much worse.

There's always a danger of new boss being just like, if not worse than the old one. Anyway, its cool to see that quite a lot of people in Scotland want to steer their own boat.

Noam Chomsky is perfectly entitled to have an opinion on Scottish Independence

He is 85 though so might be trying to keep his name in the newspapers with whatever political cause is in the headlines

Or some joouranlist interviewed him and asked 'what is your take on Scotland'

either way he is hardly going to be an influence in the yes/no vote

Thanks Dawn. Sensible voice.

It would pain me immensely to have a political line drawn across my beloved Borders that I come from.

But I totally respect the move of the Scots to get away from the abusive fuckers in London.

My warning: do not trust the UKIP folks on this, Independence, despite their party name, is NOT their concern.

It's England, Queen and Country

Wise, does Chomsky owe you money or summit?

Personally I like hearing the opinions of informed and intelligent folk - I know, why do I visit this site! - whether the subject has any direct effect on them or not.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. :)

I've emailed Prof Chomsky and have asked him to stick to issues in his local area from now on.
