Ms dubs was reading the comments page at The Sun last night (i know not why ) and told me that most of them were discussing the initial beating and focussing on the race issue. Not the fact that a man who had finally gotten on top of alcohol, fallen in love, had a recent engagement and generally turned a massive corner toward contentment should be found face down in a swimming pool like this with no suspicious circumstances....

Yes.

It never ceases to amaze me how these people, who where extremely unfortunate (for want of a better word) at some point in their lives, go on to have extremely unfortunate deaths with circumstances that aren't apparently questionable.

He was on celebrity rehab a year or so ago.

Yes, I watched it.

He seemed really troubled and kind with a deep desire to get back on track.

Someone on the radio this morning said that he was very pained, still, about the trouble that he felt he caused.

Over here (Britain) the press is saying that he'd managed to turn that corner and was now a whole lot more positive........

That's what makes it so sad.
On Celebrity Rehab he was really trying hard, and he had a lot of love from his son and his fiancee.
He really seemed like a good guy.
I remember the day the verdict came out that the police were found innocent. It was one of the most shocking verdicts that I have heard and was not suprised at the eruption that followed. It was a unsettling time and I lived not far from the rioting. I understood the rage that community must have felt.

It's horrible that Rodney felt responsible for what happened because it wasn't his fault.

It did not occur to me that foul play could be involved. Something to think about, but why?

Either way up, as sketti hints at (I think), it would be less surprising if the news were reporting his suicide. If a friend of mine was found in the bottom of a pool and I was told there were no suspicious circumstances I'd be suspicious as to why it wasn't viewed as suspicious!

I don't think he would have commited suicide, but I think he did struggle with the drink and internal pressures, so it could have been an accident.

Here he is with Dr. Drew, not too long ago. Drew remarks on how Rodney never seemed angry (which is true, he always seemed a gentle soul) and Rodney says the thought that the cops had beaten him to death.

In 1991, Pasadena, CA (just outside of Los Angeles) Rodney King was pulled over for speeding/drunk driving. He did not pull over right away, so when the cops got to him, and nearly beat him to death. Someone living in the neighborhood got it all on video.

The cops were charged and the trial was moved to Simi County (an all white area) and when the verdict came in, the cops were found innocent. Within hours riots began and several people were killed. There was so much hurt and anger at the injustice, but the rioters took it to far, including dragging people out of their vehicles, looting, and burning their own community shops.

Tensions were high and people were afraid to leave their homes. It was a sad, sad day in the history of Los Angeles. And, apparently, Rodney, even 20 years later, still suffered from it. He said that not a day went by that he did not think of it.
