A solar "superstorm" could knock out Earth's communications satellites, cause dangerous power surges in the national grid and disrupt crucial navigation aids and aircraft avionics, a major report has found.

It is inevitable that an extreme solar storm – caused by the Sun ejecting billions of tonnes of highly-energetic matter travelling at a million miles an hour – will hit the Earth at some time in the near future, but it is impossible to predict more than about 30 minutes before it actually happens, a team of engineers has warned.

I'd like to say I wouldn't be effected, but of course I would be. I think most everyone would in some way...that's the truly terrifying thing about it.

You could be like sketti and living in a cave, all wild-haired and shoeless and still have a dirty, motherfudger of a day because of this.

Even if we disregard the fact the UK is miniscule compared to the USA, from what I understand this is a very misleading headline.
The US system is set up in such a way that it would indeed knock the country into the 'Dark Ages'. Here in the UK though, we will get distruption for a little while as our grid system is set up whereby the supply would be back and up and running very quickly.
I have also read reports that if this were coming the UK would shut down certain parts of the grid, and thus the whole system can be 'powered up' once the EMP/Solar flare thingy has passed. They can't do that in the US.....one out, all out over there.

I'm thinking the opportunity to reboot the globe might not be a bad thing.

I'm also thinking what a great cover-story if there were a cyber attack took place which knocked out entire networks and no-one wanted to concede they'd been jumped.
