Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. So how many have some type of first aid ticket ? IMO a very important skill, even the basic first aid course could save a loved ones life.

So do some research, see how much a ST Johns Ambulance first aid course is. Try and get sent on a first aider at work course let the company pay. Look in your local community centers/church halls for notices about subsidised courses.

It may save your life, a loved ones life, a friends life or the old wino that collapses. But my advice would be on that , if somebody else steps forward let them give the kiss of life :P

Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.

I was a first aid instructor in the forces and RMA class 1 which is or was RGN status, I have also worked in path labs and theatre and ran our local in house military ward and pharmacy.
Many of the instrumentations have changed but much of it can still be done manually if the electricity goes off. The very basic level hasn't changed much infact I prefer the older stuff having seen some of the newer techniques on the ground as they say.

Lesson 1

The severity table consists of the four B's in to treat first.

B1. Breathing.
B2. Bleeding.
B3. Breaks.
B4. Burns, depending on the severity of the burn/s, can anyone tell me why this is?

Risk of infection?

Size of the burn?

Guesses, but seem the most obvious things to guess.

Sketti has mentioned it, third degree burns of say your back is a lot worse than a broken arm so you treat the burn first, this is why we call it first aid as everthing is relliant on first hand knowledge and observations, the rule is also reversed for a burned hand or a compound fracrure of the leg say.

Shock is one of the single biggest killers, traumatic shock that is, then infection which can undo all your hard work afterwards, many die of a simple infection after a horrific injury, this is why good first aid is key to your survival, its very easy to kill but not to save lives if your ignorant of the rhythm that surrounds us 24/7.

Lesson 2.

Homework go look up the difference between shock and traumatic shock this is one of the most important models to.recognise if your patient is to survive, and tell me what might be needed to be adminstered to stave off TS.
