Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Recently I have started recycling, repurposing, shabby chic'ing, retro'ing 'stuff'.
My latest project just before christmas was some 60's and 70's furniture which I have retro'd to give my lounge room a whole new look.

My problem is I can't get the before and after pictures on here. Knob suggested using some online facility to upload them to and then on to here. But I am a bit reluctant to do this because of copyright laws. Is there anybody who would be happy to get my emails with photo's who has the know how to put them straight on here for me please?

I have some other profects I am going to be working on and I would like to share them as it might give you guys some ideas.
Thanks

It's common to watermark pictures for copyright purposes, Jane.
Maybe an easy idea :dunno:
Pretty sure they'd still need to be hosted though.

I'm not sure there's a way to post without first uploading to a hosting site, such as Photobucket.

Nov might be able to suggest something. :dunno:

Hope he can Gilly....because on the old Sanctum I was able to do it straight from lappy to Forum with no 'third party' :(
I did it on my 'before and after garden' thread over there.

Woohoo!
Having done my recent foray into upcycling my lounge all retro, I had 3 bits of furniture left over and some paint. So I did them up too. A 70's telephone table with black vinyl seat with atomic legs, a pie crust top table and a half height corner cupboard. Stuck them on Preloved at the end of last week and just got my first enquiry asking if I could deliver them into Manchester if they paid the extra!

In the meantime I have started shabby chic'ing my bedroom. Got one of the bedside tables completed today and the drawers for a victorian'ish dressing table. Second coat and wax to the main body of the dressing table and do up the other bedside table tomorrow! The crystal knobs look absolutely terrific...they even throw off rainbows when the sun catches them which is a bonus :) . When I was buying the knobs from Home Bargains, I noticed they have started stocking the crystal door knobs too....guess what I'll be buying with some of the proceeds if my retro sale goes through!

Oh, just to mention...you know those really naff 'brown' 70's mag racks...painted mine up and it now has my fav LP's in it! Absolutely perfect for making flipping through my albums easier!

Excellent Jane but may I ask, what are atomic legs? It conjures an image of Lee Majors running in my head for some reason :chuckle:

they are legs that taper down to be narrower at the bottom .....very popular in the 50's going into 60's...

Well I'm shallow & covetous, and would like one of these little beauties...

I've got a much smaller, much less expensive model by that manufacturer - just showed you a glimpse of this as evidence that that period style is back in vogue.

I had an old record cabinet with frosted doors. I needed somewhere to keep books and somewhere to store some clothes, so after much mithering, I carefully removed the dividers from the cupboard section and installed shelves (some cheap pine I had in the shed already).

I then got one of those cheap book shelf thingies from argos as the width matched the cabinet, screwed it on top (so it can be removed at a later date), stained the whole thing, and it now looks like it was always that way. I have a tiny flat so would have had to chuck/give it away otherwise, but I like to try and hold on to unusual pieces that you can't actually get anywhere any more.

Last year I also managed to get my grubby mits on a genuine 'Hubbinet' sideboard. I love it so hard...though it is a bit battered. I think I posted platitudes about it on here at the time. It looks like a car!

Latest project....this one needs a lot of fixing too. Drop down 'flap' no hinges, the brass fitments that push the stays out have come away, the beading on the drawers gas bits missing so I'll use the beading off the pigeon hole drawer. This one is going crazy colours!
At the moment I'm thinking English Yellow base with 'highlighted' bits in Barcelona Orange, Florence and Antibes Green?.....nope forget the Antibes...one brush stroke too far!...

I made a pelmet from some old bits of plastic sheeting yesterday. Basically, when I moved in here there was secondary glazing everywhere, that had units missing. This particular one in the kitchen, I removed to find that whoever installed them had removed the cill and surround and just patched it all up.

Anyway...am rubbish at plastering so made the best of it. It looks OK, but being the nut-job I am, I notice when things are a mm out here and there, so I decided to 'hide' it with a chintzy set of curtains (made from an old 70s bed sheet). The cill is fine as I tiled that some years ago, but the wall above is slightly off so I went with a fabric pelmet until recently.

Yesterday, I remembed I had some plastic glazing sheets in the shed, so I cut them into a shape, covered in contact paper and then pinned the fabric over this.

Does the trick anyway...but I'm too shy to show you all. :kisskiss:

Those pieces are divine, Jane. Good finds.
