Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. It's amazing that we're getting to the point of knowing how much is left and still continuing to use it at this rate... (not that I'm unguilty.)
I guess future generations will just have to learn to live without it and live with the consequences of what we've done with it.

there could be other sorts of fuels in the future, electric and hydrogen are probably the most obvious, but these wont come to anything whilst we still have big oil companies controlling governments.

I agree there'll be "something else", lonewolf - maybe there already is. But we'll have to be backs-to-the-wall desperate before it's looked for. People don't change from the known easily.

Personally, I think things could "run on fresh air", seeing as fresh air contains all the particles of creation in existence and that's all anything is comprised of and runs on! But we're a long way from getting to understand how to use that and, as you say: Governments. While we have governments we'll never seek out knowledge as individuals the way people did in the past. We'll just sit waiting to be told what to do or not do next.
There is no such thing as Thin Air: Thin Air is full of the particles of creation.

Take something that costs you nothing but effort;
And practice, practice, practice until you make it something fabulous.

If he undaunted be....". (Beowulf)....

Yes the fact that 'economies' are largely based around oil certainly doesn't help.
No oil - no delivery of goods as it is, and all the other knock on effects it would have. Everything would fall apart very quickly.

What rational society would allow itself to suck so hard on such a dwindling teet?

something to do with "normalcy bias", they expect life to carry on as normal and nothing will happen to upset their cosy little lives, so they don't prepare for even the slightest little crisis or emergency, then get taken completely by surprise when it happens.
