Katie Hall was shocked the second she saw it: a light-bulb glowing in the middle of a room with no wires attached.

Looking back, it was a crude experiment, she remembers: a tiny room filled with gigantic copper refrigerator coils -- the kind you'd see if you cracked open the back of your freezer.

She walked in and out between the coils and the bulb -- and still the bulb glowed.

"I said: 'Let's work on this. This is the future.'"

What's the trick?

"We're going to transfer power without any kind of wires," says Dr Hall, now Chief Technology Officer at WiTricity, a startup developing wireless "resonance" technology.

"But, we're not actually putting electricity in the air. What we're doing is putting a magnetic field in the air."

It works like this: WiTricity builds a "Source Resonator," a coil of electrical wire that generates a magnetic field when power is attached.
If another coil is brought close, an electrical charge can be generated in it. No wires required.

"When you bring a device into that magnetic field, it induces a current in the device, and by that you're able to transfer power," explains Dr Hall.

And like that, the bulb lights up.

Wireless homes

Don't worry about getting zapped: Hall assures that the magnetic fields used to transfer energy are "perfectly safe" -- in fact, they are the same kind of fields used in Wi-Fi routers.

In the house of the future, wire-free energy transfer could be as easy as wireless internet.

If all goes to WiTricity's plans, smartphones will charge in your pocket as you wander around, televisions will flicker with no wires attached, and electric cars will refuel while sitting on the driveway.

WiTricity has already demonstrated the ability to power laptops, cell-phones, and TVs by attaching resonator coils to batteries -- and an electric car refueler is reportedly in the works.

Hall sees a bright future for the family without wires:

"We just don't think about it anymore: I'm going to drive my car home and I'm never going to have to go to the gas station and I'm never going to have to plug it in.

"I can't even imagine how things will change when we live like that."

World outside

Beyond these effort-saving applications, Hall sees more revolutionary steps.

When Hall first saw the wireless bulb, she immediately thought of medical technology -- seeing that devices transplanted beneath the skin could be charged non-intrusively.

WiTricity is now working with a medical company to recharge a left-ventricular assist device -- "a heart-pump, essentially."

The technology opens the door to any number of mobile electronic devices which have so far been held back by limited battery lives.

"The idea of eliminating cables would allow us to re-design things in ways that we haven't yet thought of, that's just going to make our devices and everything that we interact with, that much more efficient, more practical and maybe even give brand new functionality."

What's next?

The challenge now is increasing the distance that power can be transferred efficiently. This distance -- Hall explains -- is linked to the size of the coil, and WiTricity wants to perfect the same long-distance transfers to today's small-scale devices.

For this reason, the team have high hopes for their new creation: AA-sized wirelessly rechargeable batteries.

For Hall, the applications are endless: "I always say kids will say: 'Why is it called wireless?'"

"The kids that are growing up in a couple of years will never have to plug anything in again to charge it."

It's great to see so much discussion of this technology on social media and the comments thread.

There seems to be a lot of interest in the contribution of Nikola Tesla's experiments to the development of this technology. Dr Hall discussed Tesla briefly in her interview with Nick Glass:

Nick Glass: Given that Tesla and others realized all this over a Century ago, why's it taken so long?

Dr Hall: I don't think they realized exactly what we've done. They were certainly dreaming of wireless power -- there's no question about that. In those days, it was a different problem, because they were really thinking about: how do they get the power from where it's generated to where it's used. And in that case they might have been thinking about Niagara Falls generating the power and getting it to New York City -- and that's a long distance.

We're not proposing that the technology we have here at WiTricity would be used for that kind of application. When we came around, power's already being transferred by wires to homes and rooms and things of that nature, so we had a much different problem, which was really just this much shorter distance.

As WiTricity has mentioned on its website, its Highly Resonant Wireless Power Transfer technology is also distinct from Tesla's creations -- and is efficient enough to be economically viable.

So its as safe a wifi is it? :hide:

I honestly think we need to scale back all this use of magnetic fields. It can't be good for us really, it cans't be good for other animals either. Its no wonder we're not in touch with the earth.

Any electrical device we have should be completely shielded so it doesn't give off a field.

@BT - Your response is a four hour video (from what seems to me a mental patient jabbering on about the number 9) and nothing else? Seriously?

My point was that you could have elaborated. Work on the conversational side of things, you can't expect someone to watch a four hour video as just one reply without so much as a lead in to what point you're making. I didn't watch any of your videos. What point are you trying to make? Use your words, you can do it.

I can't say much about tbh SR, I don't understand that mathematical concept of vortex aerodynamics, I don't think he's a madman.

Marko Rodin has published, "The Quantum Mechanic State of DNA Sequencing", in the proceedings of the International
Bio-Technology Expo (IBEX), which is the largest genetic engineering conference in the world and is heavily attended by
the Japanese. He was also invited to present his paper, "Low Cost Propulsion Systems Based Upon the Re-evaluation of
the Physics of Matter", at the Air Space America convention, the largest U.S. convention of its type. The Rodin Coil
Antenna won a U.S. military design contest as the most powerful antenna with the greatest pickup over the longest
distance and was awarded a government contract for incorporation into the nation´s first alert warning system.

I can't find much more about this Rodin antenna 'early warning system' or the award.
rodin.freelancepartnership.com/index2.ph...ntent&do_pdf=1&id=25

I'm not sure how to verify this information as it will be likely secret from public knowledge.

I found just this document markorodin.com/rodincoil/2013/06/russell-p-blake/
It appears to be written by by Russell P. Blake, Former Senior Researcher, Microsoft

It's as though Rodin is being ignored, I guess that's what I mean, 'making low energy devices is not wanted'.
There's no money in it and Rodin's coil appears to be stuck in the raw development stage.
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

I'm saying that he appears to have produced a mathematical design for something that works as a raw design, nothing appears to have been developed about the coil, so it's low energy wireless technology that is not being picked up upon.
I can't say that I can discuss anything about the mathematics or the technical side of magnetic energy, coil designs or other related topics.

So I'm just really saying 'This guy appears to be onto something' because he appears to not wish to sell his coil to the industry, the industry does not appear to want to back further development.

It appears to me that these coils could be fitted to buildings and could produce the same power, as wires, by being attached to the electricity grid, but they would not use so much electricity, this means they'd be like a transformer, and from them energy could be picked up by devices in a home/business wirelessly, the outcome would be, your electricity would be the same except.

1) Less would be used, as the coil can create more from less.
2) You'd not need no wires, except to perhaps have th4e coil attached to the electricity grid, from there it would output more than input.

All the energy gets put towards the hole in the centre and is concentrated, it then appears to draw on the natural magnetic energy of the coil, thus making more than there was, that's about as much as I think I can understand it.

Seems like lots of refining is needed, and coded shielding for transformers would need to be developed, thus it's still at stage 1.
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

The problem is that the 'energy companies' would want the coil positioned on their side of the grid, hence it saves them money, whilst the public are charged the same as now, see his copyright statement on that 4 hour YouTube presentation at 17Mins.

All he's stumbled across is a more efficient way to generate a magnetic field. It could never output more than input as you say. Less power for the same magnetic field, so stronger antennas and more efficient motors.

It isn't really that ground breaking to be honest. For clarification. the levitating coil video you posted is a con, there is another coil under the "floating" one and they are repelling each other.

E2a ^^^ Sorry, that video was a related one I clicked on, not one you posted.

I think there's something unique about the shape of the Rodin coil and the mathematics of the wire bindings, it's to do with the ultimate in energy efficiency, you'd need to look into it more, he has certain wires travelling both in and out of the centre hole, like 'recharging from the vortex, as you say it's something to do with 9.

If you Google Rodin vortex mathematics it's explained, thought I think I've already posted the common presentation of it on that Rense link #$

I'm something of an electronics hobbyist so I already know a fair bit about it. It doesn't have any over unity properties whatsoever. Do you know what a fractal antenna is? Its on a similar line to that in the sense that it isn't ground breaking but an improvement.

Obviously the idea is nothing new.
How it can be applicable to more modern low consumption appliances is of significance though. When technology like this can be coupled with other emerging technologies such as the sugar battery cell I posted the other day it could start to create a good amount of power out of abundant properties.
The health aspect of wifi electricity does concern me though.

Its nothing new and its never been made use of because its only of much use over a short distance, inverse square rule and all that :)

Blake was referencing the Rodin Taurus, NOT the Rodin Coil that I was referencing and we have been discussing.

I'm not suggesting his Vortex Mathematics is not ground breaking, it possibly is (I'm not a mathematical genius, so I can't peer review it). What I'm saying is that his application of it to the humble coil isn't a big deal.

His ideal application of it to the coil hasn't actually been done. Up to now it has been impossible to do, and his reasoning is that he's not an engineer. What I find interesting is that it isn't the concept of vortex mathematics that has produced this coil (according to him, he can't create one), the coil has been produced by Fibonacci sequence fractals.

Stop it SR.

The Rodin coil/torus is the same thing, the coil is in the shape of a torus.
it's a doughnut shaped coil hence 'torus.
So Blake is discussing the coil.

Are you suggesting that Rodin has a Torus and a Coil?
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

So Blake is discussing the coil.

Are you suggesting that Rodin has a Torus and a Coil?

Stop what? Stop pointing out what I perceive as flaws in your arguments? I can't do that, its what forms meaningful debate.

What I'm suggesting (as I explained) is that he is not talking about the coil, he's talking about the concepts behind it that were used to create it (Vortex Mathematics). As I said, a mathematically correct Torus coil has never been produced, he (and anyone else who has tried) is unable to produce it, as such he cannot be referencing the coil, but the theory behind it.

It is interesting that the coils that have been produced follow fractal geometery (they can't follow Taurus because he hasn't been able to make one), and there is certainly a link between the two.

Robin has a Taurus and a Fractal Coil. NOT a Taurus Coil, because nobody has been able to produce one.
